June 1, 1792. The Commonwealth of Kentucky becomes the 15th state in the then still new, United States of America. It’s limestone bedrock formed from thousands of years as the bottom of an ancient sea will gave rise to the fertile soil that today supports the largest beef cattle herd (of which Masters Acres is a small part) east of the Mississippi River.

The spring 2027 calving season began this week. Yes we know it is currently 2026 but we introduced the bull into the herd this week to begin service.

If all goes well this cow will have a calf the first week of March next year. She will nurse the calf until October when it will be placed on winter pasture and fed supplemental hay until spring rains and warmer temperatures brings on new grass. It will stay on pasture throughout next summer until supplemental hay is again needed for the winter. Then sometime in the summer of 2028 it will be ready for harvest.

If it is a heifer (female) with excellent growth and conformation she might be selected to join the cow herd. In which case she will be introduced to a different bull to begin the process again, producing a calf in 2028 that won’t be processed for sale until 2030.

It takes patience to produce our home grown Kentucky Proud Craft Beef for our customers.

Our “Feedlot”

Tradition dictates that Kentucky cattlemen wean their calves, take them to the local stockyards where they are co-mingled with other farmers’ calves, loaded into large trucks and shipped out to western or “I” state feedlots where they are fed concentrated rations specifically formulated to produce rapid weight gains at the expense of flavor. For the past dozen years we have weaned our calves and kept them on our Fleming County farms where they graze our pastures for up to two years providing the time required to develop the flavorful Kentucky Proud beef we are happy to offer you, our customers.

Your next opportunity to purchase our beef is tomorrow, May 30, 9am until 1pm at the Original Mason County Farmers Market, Tractor Supply parking lot, Market Square Dr in Maysville and the Fleming County Farmers Market, 9am until noon in the Fleming County Cooperative Extension- Agriculture and Natural Resources parking lot, 1384 Elizaville Road in Flemingsburg.

This has been an exceptionally dry Spring. We have been praying for inches instead of tenths to nourish the grasses, legumes and forbs in our pastures and hay fields. Today those prayers were answered.
