Farming ear corn in the Cane Creek valley of Western NC, trying to have some type of income when we retire from teaching. We started this business by driving to NJ and stopping at a tractor place and the guy had an old farmall 856 in pieces, well we purchased it and put it together, she looked great and Elesa said well now what are you going to do with it, if you know me that was all it took and I was farming again!!!!!!

Getting ready for harvest going to go over combine, change oil, grease, lubricate things, started to take orders for bag corn have about 800 bags ordered, will start in about 3 weeks. Went to lokk at 1 acre garden out back full of w**ds withall the rain so mowed the entire field, then got wild hair and put 3 bottom plow behind the Farmall 450 tractor, ( the one I bought back in 2012 that was my dads and grandpa's from 1958.) Plow and tractor worked great until Elesa comes roaring out to the fiels and says there is a big thunderstorm coming so only got it 1/2 done. Glad she did would never have seen it until to late!!! Will put pic up when I am doing the rest

Hello to all enjoy the next few weeks b/c summer is winding down and fall will be here before you know it. Sweet corn is done, had 1/2 normal crop, drought and now too much rain. did get enough for us and to give neighbors some, about 60 dozen. One new variety that I tried did not germinate so there went 1/2 acre with no production. Will disk up the acre as soon as it dries up, too wet to do any field work. Corn looks better than I thought but will only know what yields like when harvest starts. Update on Bertha the tractor, found an engine and she is at the mechanics place, hope to have her finished and back in the fields by mid october, will also put in new TA for you Farmall fans. TTFN

Received 3 inches + of rain the last 7 days, you would thinks the ground would be wet, it is not, the crops and trees soaked up all they could get, streams only up from house and road runoff. supposed to get more thurday and fri, should be ok as lonf as we do not get 3-4 inches in couple of hours. Sweet corn is close maybe 5 -8 days, might pick alittle this weekend. Cut w**ds in sweet corn patch and cultivation helped alot with w**d issus. Although not technically organic is is almost there, will be worms in the end no insecticide, used herbicide b/c if I did not use herbicide there would be no crop. Variety is honey select, very sweet yellow. TTFN

Well big things are happening, first of all thanks to former students who help me, I purchased a "new truck, will take grain bed off the old C70 chevy and put it on a 99 frightliner 70. It has air brakes and a cat diesel engine, with 42 k miles, pics will be coming. They will be doing the mechanic work and the welding on one students trucking place, nice huh! Will put the old 79 C70 truck chassis up for sale. Also found engine for Bertha, the 856, will pick it up and have another mechanic to install it, hope this will cost about 7k or less to get up and running again. will work on the combine next week to get it ready for harvest so things are looking up with better equipment! Took soil samples last week, ground was very dry did one after having 3/4 inch of rain and was wet until about 8 inches down and then dry. Sent them off today should get results in 3 weeks. Did get another inch so corn looks good ears are filling. Forecast is for more rain this weekend hope they are correct! TTFN

Yes! Finally some rain. The last 10 days we have received 1.5 inches, that is enough for 1 week at this stage of growth for corn and beans. Corn is tasseling and setting ears and filling kernels, hope there are enough nutrients available at this later stage, specifically Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium, along with ca, mg, s, fe, mn, boron. Need more rain again next week. Sweet corn is about 2 weeks out from completly filling, the stand was low had a new variety that did not germinate at all. The Honey Select variety is doing OK, It is a super sweet yellow. Nature always throws curve balls into farmers plans, look at the drought monitor for NC and surrounding states and wonder how we are going to feed all the people and thier needs, good thing we have a big country.

Quick update, since corn is in tassel and setting ears as well as the sweet corn, it needs about 1 inch or more of rain a week. We are in a drought, not as bad as most of virginia and north carolina but very dry. We are getting a few tenths here and there, no rain since June 28, was very hot showers all around none here. Finally got 1/2 inch yesterday, this will help but need more all this week. I am still fearful that crop will be diminished, will hope and pray that we get more showers the next few days. TTFN

The first planted corn is now 10-12 ft tall, is coming into tassel and setting ears and most have 2, really need rain would be ok with 1 inch but no hail, have about 30 acres like this and the other 25 are not far behing and then the last 5 is trying to catch up. Oh the w**ds are dying and the spray is working!!!!!! TTFN
