Farming ear corn in the Cane Creek valley of Western NC, trying to have some type of income when we retire from teaching. We started this business by driving to NJ and stopping at a tractor place and the guy had an old farmall 856 in pieces, well we purchased it and put it together, she looked great and Elesa said well now what are you going to do with it, if you know me that was all it took and I was farming again!!!!!!

Sprayed all the conventional corn to kill broadleaf w**ds and how about that IT RAINED. Got 2 tenths more coming now supposed to rain all the rest of this week and next, here I go do not want to much or it will wash the herbicide down below the germination range and then here come the w**ds. I do have an ace up my sleeve, I will break out the cultivator! I will need to do about 7 acres to get rid of johnson grass so will scout and look for problems. Will cultivate around the beginning of June depends upon weather. TTFN

finished spraying the last 8 acres and will try to spray the 6 acres of field bindw**d tomorrow with atrazine and dicamba, these are broadleaf herbicides and will not kill the corn which is a grass. Will order planter parts monday and see if I can finish the last 5 acre piece by end of May. Sweet corn not germinated need rain desperately. TTFN

Used the 886 and sprayer the day after I got it sprayed about 20 acres and only have 8 more to do next week. Worried about broadleaf w**ds coming up in the conventional corn, going to contact extension agent and figure out what to spray and will cultivate too! TTFN

The "new" 886 works well put it on the sprayer monday, calibrated it, and finished spraying all but 8 acres on tuesday, rained on wed and got .9, (9 tenths mom) by thurday morning. Since last 8 acres are roundup ready will spary it in couple of weeks, let w**ds get started and then BAM. Still have 5 acres to plant of conventional and the sweet corn will try to get that finished by May 15. THEN DONE!!!!!! Going to move Bertha (856) under shelter and start looking for an engine. All the corn that is planted 55 acres are up so now need about 1 inch of rain a week and warm sunny days!!! TTFN

Wow what a surprise the farmer is going to deliver the 886 today, May 3rd and hope all goes well, will put pics up soon!

Well things are more interesting, another farmer called and said that he know of an 886 International that might be for sale and so met with him an he took me to the Wells farm in Sandy Mush, about 45 minutes from here, very nice people and they are big IH fans and they work on, redo and repair red tractors. They have an 886, 1979 model that is in very good mechanical shape, just not pretty, so I purchased it, they will deliver it by middle of this coming week. Will put it on the sprayer and get back to work. Need to spray 30 acres and then move to spray last 5 after planting the 5. Need rain send some please. TTFN

Well it has been an interesting week, was spraying the corn that I planted 25 acres for w**d control and right near the end Bertha, the 856, threw a rod or crankshaft through the engine block, she is dead, needs a new/rebuilt engine, may need to get another tractor.
I did plant 22 acres of corn yesterday and we got .7 inches of rain last night, the original planting of corn is up and rowed, this new planting should be up in about a week. A neighbor is going to let me borrow his tractor so I can spray what is in the ground, I have 5 acres left to plant and the old 1958 450 is hanging in there, planted all with the old girl! Let's see how this all works out, farming is tough but I do enjoy tillage and planting watching the crop grow and then harvest to see the fruits of your labor. Will try to plant the sweet corn in the next 2-3 weeks. TTFN

Hey there to all who read my posts, thank you. This past thursday it happened, started to plant corn, yes april 17, it has been very dry and we we supposed to get some rain so I planted 11 acres of roundup ready on w**dy fields and 25 acres of conventional for HNG farm. I will try to spray for w**ds on all of the corn this week, tuesday and wed. Should get rain this coming weekend. I think it will germinate after the next rain, hope no big cold snaps but ground is warm and should be in 80s late this week. Will try to plant the rest about 22 acres week after next. TTFN

going to plant some corn late this week or early next week, will plant 8 acres of conventional and 8 of roundup ready on the fields that have w**d problems from the hurricane, yes we will be fighting w**ds for years I am afraid and it is not fun. Will cultivate like they did in the old days on w**dy areas so that the combine does not get plugged up. Had that happen 3 times last fall and there were about 6 or 7 acres that I could not harvest, w**ds were to thick, an yes I applied herbicide just like the label said. I do not like w**ds! Bought a new herbicide, Outlook, very expensive, but should take care of all broadleaf w**ds and has residual effects. TTFN

All ground is ready to plant, will do some repair work and have all seed and fertilizer ready to go. I purchased fuel before px increase and have some in tank, hope this blows over before I need more. Sprayed some no till fields yesterday plan to plant end of april. Hard not to go and plant with this warm weather, I know better but still want to, it's like saddling up an old horse and the brain says go, go, go! Supposed to get colder and rain next few weeks April showers bing May flowers! TTFN
