Welcome September! With all its moody breezes, long shadows and sweet, crisp scents.

This week's paper-wrapped bouquets feature the phenomenal, iridescent orange 'Bar Bossa Ch*****ne' brain celosia, green and carmine zinnias, white lisianthus, black ninebark & more. What a palette to usher in fall!

I hope to see you at the Flint Farmers' Market on Saturday. I'll be there through September with fresh flowers, as long as the weather holds, then the first two weeks of October with our *dried floral pumpkins.* 🧡🎃

Who else loves the enchantment of autumn?!
I certainly do.

All the blush ruffles of a Ballerina Zinnia; so soft and so dramatic at the same time. I love this zinnia's distinct personality.

We'll have these beauties available (and more!) Saturday at the Flint Farmers' Market 🌿 Come see us, under the pavilion.

How much longer will our flower season last? We will be at the market every Saturday in September with fresh flowers (Lord Willing & the weather holds!) and the first two Saturdays in October with our dried floral pumpkins. I'd love to see you soon, if you've not yet had a chance to swing by this season.

Come see these zinnias!

Celosia 'Shimmer'

This cultivar was recently introduced by Johnny's Selected Seeds and is new to our farm this year. I love the pastel plumes that nearly sparkle at twilight.

Keep an eye out for these beauties, coming soon in our paper-wrapped market bouquets.

If you're visiting the farm stand this Saturday at the Flint Farmers' Market please note that Crim is happening and a few streets downtown will be closed.

Please come see me anyway!

This is the season for breathtaking blooms and you truly won't want to miss them.

I'll be there, under the pavilion, rain or shine.

Wait! That doesn't look like your farm!

It's not! It's my friends Luke and Anna's farm!

This season, we had the opportunity to plant three fifty foot rows of flowers at nearby Grace Fields Farm.

Heading into this past spring, I wasn't sure if I'd have enough room here at Twig End to grow all the flowers I wanted to bring to you at the Flint Farmers' Market. Luke and Anna were kind enough to let me plant blooms at their place.

Here's my guy with a bucket full of gorgeous Amazon Neon dianthus in cherry.

I chose cultivars to plant that only need to be checked on occasionally, with generous harvest windows. Dianthus. Amaranth. Gomphrena. Celosia. So much celosia!

Special thanks to my local farming friends! Luke & Anna, I hope you are enjoying the splashes of crazy color in your field!

My socks have been officially knocked off!!

This week's paper-wrapped bouquets feature lisianthus (for the very first time!) and I am utterly swooning. You have to come see these beauties for yourself.

Also in this week's bouquets:

amaranth
artemisia
coneflower cones
curly willow twigs
frosted explosion grass
ninebark
northern sea oats
penstemon seed pods
& zinnias

Please note that this weekend is Back to the Bricks. If you are coming to the market from west of town, use Court or Robert T. Longway. Saginaw Street and all her side streets are closed for the pretty cars and their spectators.

Why I stopped growing dahlias.

Now, all the dahlia lovers out there, please put your knives and pitchforks down. I too also love dahlias. I love their many petals, their long, strong stems, their subtle sunset tones. I have my favorites (looking at you, Robin Hood and Bracken Rose). They've been a Twig End Farm staple for years.

But I have a very small farm. A VERY small farm. And I finally admitted to myself that the space I've used to grow over sixty dahlia plants should be dedicated to a flower that would give me many more blooms per square foot.

Meet lisianthus.

It has taken me years to build up the confidence to finally take the plunge and start growing this beauty. Now I wonder why I waited so long.

Please no hate but now I'll compare and contrast dahlias and lisianthus and why it makes more sense to grow the second on my farm.

Like I said, blooms per square foot. I plant over 150 lisianthus in the space I used to plant just six dahlias plants. That's unbelievably more blooms, more than I can describe, which truly makes a huge impact on a tiny farm.

Vase life. A dahlia bloom will start looking sad in the vase after three or four days. Lisianthus? It's probably the one flower with the best reputation for vase life. Want something that still looks stunning on your table after two weeks? Lisianthus is your girl.

I could go on. I could talk about their long window of harvest, how well they store in the cooler, how gorgeous they look in the garden. How much less physical labor goes into growing lisianthus than growing dahlias (and lifting and dividing their tubers and hoping they store well through winter). You get the picture.

And for my dahlia people: I am still growing twelve dahlia plants this year. I couldn't go entirely without a few of my favorites. But honestly, I'm not sure I'll even be growing that many next year. I'm not sure I'll need to.

Because lisianthus have earned my respect and stolen my heart.
