I have a special knack for finding four leaf clovers. 🍀 While feeding and checking fence this morning, I found four different ones!

My granny was the same way; she could walk through a field and have a handful of them picked in no time. I like to think I get my Irish luck from her.

New record for the farm! It’s February 1, and we haven’t started feeding hay from the shed yet.

Cattlemen are a lot like the ant in the old Aesop’s fable, spending a lot of the Summer planning for Winter. During the warm part of the year, we determine which fields to cut based on how many rolls we anticipate we’ll need for Winter. We store as much of this hay as we can under sheds, then stack the excess outside.

When the cold season rolls around, we feed all the external hay bales first and then move into the hay shed.

We try to ration accordingly so that we won’t run out before grass starts growing again. Thankfully, we’ve never run completely out of hay, though we’ve cut it close some years.

We’ve also never made it this far into Winter without feeding hay from inside the shed. Fortunately, it’s lasted until now, when the cold weather’s easing up and Spring is around the corner. 🌱
