We’ve seen this before.
When Americans are told food prices are too high, one solution always seems to appear: bring in cheaper foreign product.
We’re seeing it now with beef, up to 300,000 metric tons of imported ground beef being opened up to help bring prices down.
But shrimpers have lived this story for decades.
Instead of fixing the problems inside the domestic supply chain, America allowed massive amounts of imported shrimp to compete directly with American-caught shrimp.
Consumers got cheaper shrimp.
But American shrimpers lost market share, boats left the water, and domestic production became harder to sustain.
Now we’re hearing the same argument with beef:
“We need cheaper food, so let’s import it.”
And that raises a bigger question:
Are we actually fixing America’s food supply…
or are we simply making it easier to replace American producers with cheaper foreign product?
Because we’ve seen this movie before.
And shrimpers know how it ends.
