Sunday Fishkeeping Check-In 🐟

Some fish are naturally bold, some are shy, and some surprise you once they learn you are not a threat.

This male has started coming over to investigate when my hand is in the water. I do not force it — I just move slowly, stay consistent, and let him decide how close he wants to get.

That is one of my favorite parts of fishkeeping: watching individual personalities come out over time.

**Happy Water Change Weekend from The Fish Closet! 💧**

This is one of the most-used tools in the fish room: the Python water changer.

It is not fancy, but it makes water change day a whole lot easier — especially when you have more than one tank to care for.

Weekend maintenance is not the glamorous part of fishkeeping, but it is one of the most important parts. Around here, it means checking tanks, watching behavior, wiping glass, cleaning sponge filters when needed, and making sure everyone is acting normal.

A lot of fish problems start small. Catching those little changes early can make a big difference.

Healthy fish do not happen by accident. They come from small habits done consistently.

Behind the Scenes in The Fish Closet

Not every fish room photo is a perfect glamour shot. Sometimes it is caves, sponge filters, sand, algae, and plecos doing exactly what plecos do — hiding, grazing, and claiming their favorite spots.

These blue-eyed lemon bristlenose are one of the main fish we raise here in The Fish Closet, and this is the kind of setup they love: places to hide, surfaces to explore, and a quiet tank where they can grow.

Healthy fish do not happen by accident. A lot of it is giving them the right environment and then watching the little details every day.

Tiny update from The Fish Closet 🧡

The calico fantail/ryukin goldfish eggs have started hatching! We have about 20 baby goldfish so far, and they’re just beginning to swim around and pick at green water.

They are still extremely tiny and have a long grow-out journey ahead, but this is a very exciting first hatch for this project.

Exciting update from The Fish Closet 🧡

Our calico fantail/ryukin goldfish spawned this morning! We were able to collect some eggs and they’re now being carefully incubated while we wait to see what develops.

This is still very early — eggs are not fry yet, and fry are a long way from being ready — but this is a huge step for this project and we’re excited to see where it goes.

Happy Water Change Weekend! 💧

Here’s your friendly reminder to check your tanks, test your water, and keep up with regular maintenance.

Clean, stable water is one of the biggest keys to healthy fish. Water changes help remove built-up waste, keep nitrate under control, and support better growth, color, health, and breeding behavior.

This weekend’s fish room topic: cultured green water.

Green water is not always an accident or a dirty tank. In fish breeding, it can be an intentional live food source. Green water contains tiny algae and microorganisms that fry, young fish, and some adult fish can graze on throughout the day.

Many breeders culture green water on purpose, and some also use it to feed daphnia. The daphnia can then be fed to fish as another nutritious live food.

At The Fish Closet, we believe variety matters. Frozen foods, prepared foods, live foods, and natural grazing sources can all play a role in giving fish a more well-rounded diet.

Green water is just one more useful tool in the fish room when it is cultured and used intentionally.

Beginner fishkeeping tip 🐟
Do not rinse your filter media or seeded sponge in tap water.
The beneficial bacteria that help keep your tank stable live on surfaces like sponge filters, filter pads, gravel, décor, and plants. Chlorine in untreated tap water can harm that bacteria.
If you need to clean a sponge or filter media, gently swish it in old tank water during a water change.
That keeps the good bacteria alive while removing debris.
Small habits like this can make a big difference in keeping fish healthy.

Cycle Starter Program reminder 🫧
Our seeded starter sponges are now part of The Fish Closet Cycle Starter Program.
These sponges are seeded in established tanks to help new aquarium setups get a stronger start with beneficial bacteria.
They are especially helpful for new fishkeepers who set up a tank and then realize the tank still needs time to cycle.
A seeded sponge is not an instant-cycle guarantee. New tanks may still show ammonia or nitrite while the cycle establishes, but the goal is to help reduce large spikes and give the tank a better start.

Ethyl & Sulfur update 💕
We tried another breeding setup with Ethyl and Sulfur this weekend, but this time Sulfur did not build a bubble nest.
That’s part of breeding. Sometimes the signs look promising one week, and the next attempt is completely different.
Nothing was forced, and both fish are safe. For now, they are back to being separated and conditioned while we watch their behavior and decide when or if to try again.
Breeding is never guaranteed, and that is exactly why we want to share the real process — the good, the frustrating, and the waiting.
Healthy fish always come first.
