It's like pulling a surprise from the ground šŸ„• šŸ„• šŸ„•

This video is destined for a group of preschoolers to show them how carrots are grown and harvested. I liked it so much, I thought I would share it here.

I only grow a small amount of carrots in the early season and I harvest them with a digging fork. The digging fork is inserted into the ground a few inches away from the line of carrots to loosen them. I then hand pull them from the ground, wash them and bunch them. It's a labor of love.

Many larger scale farmers harvest carrots by using a bar that cuts under them in the ground. The bar loosens the soil and leaves the carrots on top of the earth. Depending on the size of the operation, conveyor belts might be used to transfer the carrots to trucks, transferring them to cleaning facilities.

This year we *might* have a later carrot planting. My kids devour them and people always ask for them at market. Our rocky ground has made it hard to grow them long and straight, but after years of working the soil, it's getting a little easier.

That's right! We'll be back at the market in a few weeks when the hot crops, things like cucumbers, tomatoes, flowers & more start producing!!!! I picked the first ripe cherry tomato last week! It will be a few weeks before I have enough to sell, but the plants are starting to fill with green tomatoes!

The Bitterroot is hoppin' this weekend! Keep an extra eye out for those deeršŸ˜‰ The 50‑Mile Yard Sale is basically Frogger on the highway. STAY SAFE!

July is our naturally slow month at the market. A mid‑season breather for some, while plenty of vendors are off with family events, fireworks stands, camping trips, or tackling those ā€œnever‑ending but somehow still hereā€ home projects. Hot crops are just begining to show, our main farmer Tangled Carrot Farm, LLC returns in a few weeks.

If you know us, we are small but mighty. We’ll be out there Saturday 9–2, riding the 50‑Mile Yard Sale chaos. Rain, shine and watching for that wild mid afternoon twist the weather decides to throw.

Timing is everything. And mine is not always on point.

Early season is challenging because I'm busting at the seems with plants to plant while the little weeds take root. It's a race. Planned garden walk through with weeding tools in hand help!

Wind in the Bitterroot. It's frequent and intense in the spring and fall. We fight with it and talk about how and what we might change to adapt. It seems to growing in intensity through the years....

...the high tunnel doors were open!
We'll have many more snap peas in the weeks ahead! These are the last of the peas from the high tunnel and the next round of peas are growing strong outdoors!

As the weeks progress we'll have a short lull in farmatand produce and then the quantities will steadily rise through the season!

Next year we plan to have more consistent offerings! The farmstand will be ready instead of being built and I (farmer Sarah) will be finished with graduate school!

Cheers! I hope y'all enjoy the 3 pints of peas šŸ˜‚
I'll be patching some claw holes in the plastic when it's dry!
