September 2nd, I’ll officially be stepping into Chapter 34 of my life. 🙏🏾

Anybody who really knows me knows I’m normally not a birthday person. I stopped making a big deal out of my birthday because, to me, it became just another day.

But this year, I want my birthday to mean something different.

Instead of making my birthday completely about ME, I want to use 34 to be a blessing to somebody else.

As a funeral professional, I spend my days walking alongside families during some of the hardest moments of their lives. What many people don’t see is that every family I serve reminds me of the loved ones I’ve lost.

Ever since my grandmother passed away, I don’t think I’ve grieved the way I truly needed to. In many ways, I still feel her presence. I believe she’s watching over me, guiding me, and encouraging me to keep going.

There have been several people who played a major role in shaping the man I am today—people I loved deeply—but I never got the opportunity to say goodbye. While I was incarcerated, I missed funerals and final conversations that I’ll never be able to get back. Those moments are gone, and that’s a weight I’ve carried for years.

Because of that, serving grieving families is never “just a job” to me. Every service touches my heart. Every tear reminds me of my own. Every goodbye brings back memories of the people I wish I could have embraced one last time.

So today, my prayer is simple:

Lord, continue to strengthen me. Continue to use me as a vessel of compassion for families who are hurting. Thank You for allowing me to learn from the incredible people You placed in my life. Although You called them home, the wisdom, love, and values they poured into me still live on. Help me to honor their legacy by serving others with dignity, humility, patience, and unconditional love. Let me love people the way they loved me, and most importantly, the way You have called us to love one another.

To everyone who has lost someone they love, know this: your grief is seen, your tears matter, and your loved one’s legacy lives on through the love they planted in you.
