When going grocery shopping make a list and stick to it. Most of the unhealthy foods we buy are on impulse. Only go down the aisles that have the foods that are on your list. This will help you not buy junk and save money! Also never go to the grocery store hungry, you most definitely will buy foods that you don't need.

Most people would think that packing your own lunch would be healthier, but most of the time lunches that we pack are missing major food groups. Most brown bags contain a sandwich, chips, and a soft drink. Where are the fruits and veggies? Try a peanut butter sandwich with cut up vegetables and hummus. Switch your chips to nuts and add a fruit. Wrap deli meat around a string cheese paired with apple slices. Aim for a protein, fruit, vegetable, and fat at every meal.

Don't give up! If you don't like a food prepared one way, don't give up. Some people don't like cooked carrots, but they love raw carrots dipped in hummus or roasted in the oven. Don't like steamed broccoli, add a slice of cheese on top. It takes about 18-20 times to be exposed to something for it to become a habit.

Wanting to buy healthy foods, but your refrigerator is jam packed full of food. Make room for healthy foods. Store healthy foods in front which encourages you to eat them. If junk is the first thing you see, you will more likely to grab the unhealthy food.

Apples are amazing! It's almost apple season where there will be several varieties of apples available. One small apple contains around 75-100 calories and have almost 4 grams of fiber. You lose the fiber when you drink apple juice. You also get more calories even if it is 100% fruit juice. Include apples everyday into your diet. Try them sliced up with peanut butter or paired with cheddar cheese.

Everyone loves to find a new recipe to cook, but some of the websites we use can be deceiving. Remember to look at serving sizes when preparing a new dish. Focus on recipes that are high in fiber from fruits and vegetables and protein found in meat/fish, nuts, whole grains, and eggs.

Children eat what is offered to them or what is available. If all they see is junk food all they will ask for is junk food. If kids see cookies they will want cookies, if kids see fruit they will want fruit. Keep healthy foods at eye level so they can see them easily, and is easy to grab.

Getting back into the swing of school and extracurricular activities can be tough. Also trying to plan out healthy snacks and meals can be overwhelming. Plan ahead for the week and know what you are going to cook. Cook in batches on the weekends for easy prep during the week. Cook extra chicken on Sunday for salads for lunch or for tacos on Tuesday. Keep precut fruits available with packs of preportioned peanut butter for an easy go to snack. 100 calorie packs can be expensive so portion out your own nuts in snack bags to keep cost down.

Eat and drink to fuel your body. If we feed our bodies junk, then we aren't going to feel very good. Sugar found in candy, sodas, and cakes/cookies leave us feeling tired and yucky after a while. Feed your body a variety of lean protein, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fat to keep feeling fuller longer and more energized. Also, don't forget to drink plenty of water to keep hydrated. Drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water each day.
