Weeping Willow Farm

Weeping Willow Farm Members of American Dairy Goat Association & Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund. ADGA reg oberhasli & alpine dairy goats & small apiary.

We practice natural stewardship with our land & livestock. Offering milk, soaps, caramels, honey, & beeswax products. We are a small family-run dairy goat farm located in Floyd County, VA, focused on breeding high quality ADGA registered American Oberhaslis, Purebred Oberhaslis, Chestnut Oberhaslis, American Alpines, and Oberhasli-Alpine Experimentals. We breed for heavy production, long lactation

, and health & hardiness. Our herd is fully tested, rotationally grazed/browsed, and as naturally raised as possible. We offer dairy herdshares with the raw milk produced from our herd, as well as natural goat milk soaps and skin care. We sell locally at farmers markets, festivals, and small businesses. Periodically, we also provide dairy goat-keeping classes, cheese making classes, and soap making classes here on the farm. We look forward to meeting you and love sharing our passion with the community!

In case you’re wondering why you haven’t heard from us lately🐝🍯…
We’ve got a truck full of honey and some serious extracting to do! Still four more hives to go, so not quite finished harvesting yet. I’m telling you, bees are amazing creatures! If only we humans could work together half as well as these bees do!❤️

What rotational grazing looks like on our farm… I was recently asked what schedule we use when rotationally grazing our herd and I had to chuckle. Schedule?? More like weather forecast. Because it truly is up to the weather—definitely not our own made up schedule. Not here, atleast.
Drought? Shorter times in each field so they don’t overgraze. Heavy rains? Stick to the higher hills where rain water doesn’t collect. Hot and humid? Make sure there’s plenty of woods for shade. Thunderstorms in the forecast? It’ll have to be a field with shelter. Chilly? Well, that doesn’t affect them, so we’ll ignore that one. Anyway, we do everything according to the weather. We want to steward this land, not necessarily “farm” it, per se. So a man-made schedule gets thrown out the window and we replace it with a good look at what the weather has been doing and what it will do. Not going to lie, this past spring’s drought has knocked us for a bit of a loop and we have to be extra careful with the time alotted in each field. Which affects the other animals on our farm as well, because the horses (who prefer shorter grass while the goats thrive on long grass and brush) follow after the goats. And the chickens (who love to scratch up anything they can in the fields) follow after the horses. So I guess you could call it a sort-of circle of life… and it all starts with the soil/grass. So, no schedule here. Just a close eye on the skies.❤️🌦️

See this cute little guy in the front of this picture? He’s the whole reason we try to be present for each kidding- in the off chance that help may be needed. And that was what happened yesterday afternoon when mama delivered the first boy no problem, but just couldn’t seem to get this second boy out. With assistance, and some arm strength, we got him out and all is well. Mama and babes are just fine! Assistance is rarely needed, and many years have gone by where no assistance has been needed at all. But being present could be a matter of life and death for that one rare complication. So we choose to be present as often as we possibly can. And why wouldn’t we? The miracle of birth never grows old!❤️

Journey and Koal are here to say that we are back in action after taking a wonderful few days off with family and friends to celebrate our daughter’s graduation!🎓
As you can see by the pile of wood chips our canine farmhands are hanging out on, work starts back up for us tomorrow-which not only includes getting our hands dirty in the gardens, but two more goats to kid, weaning older kids, cheeses, soaps, yogurts, and caramels to make, markets to prep for, and more fencing to put up.
Thankful for the opportunity to steward this land and the animals we care for, and blessed to have the ability to rest from the work now and then!
See you all at the markets or at the farm fridge!

It’s going to be a bit quiet here for the next week as we celebrate our youngest daughter’s high school graduation and my last year homeschooling with our family and friends. But don’t worry—our outside fridge is fully stocked with goat milk, yogurt, caramels, and eggs! So come on over and get what you need when you need it!
If you’re wanting to purchase goat milk soaps this week, please call/text/message ahead and I’ll be happy to get your order taken care of and placed outside in our carport for easy pickup. Thanks so much, everyone!❤️🎓

Sitting here, celebrating the fact that I just received the licensure in the mail from the state to sell raw goat milk yogurt, with my goat milk yogurt smoothie in hand! 👏
Raw goat milk yogurt will now be available in pints at both the Sunset Market in Meadows of Dan Friday nights and the Floyd Farmers Market Saturday mornings, as well as in our farm frig!
*Don’t like plain yogurt? Just add a half to one teaspoon of vanilla/strawberry/etc extract per cup of yogurt along side a dollop or so of sweetener like honey or maple syrup and you’re all set!*❤️🥛
