🐻 Bear Update from All En Time Farm! 🐻

Well, this morning while Matt was feeding, I noticed Fancy prancing back and forth. I thought to myself, “She must be really hungry this morning!”

As Matt was preparing her breakfast ration, he happened to glance over into our neighbor’s field and spotted our bear. 👀

After feeding Fancy, he hopped on the Tracker and rode down to the gap in our fence to get a better look and capture some video.

What we discovered was quite a surprise…

We don’t have one bear visiting the neighborhood—we have TWO bears! 🐻🐻

That certainly explains why Barrett has been working so hard on night patrol lately and keeping us informed through the baby monitor!

Here’s the video Matt captured this morning. Life on the farm is always full of surprises, and apparently our local bear family has decided to make themselves right at home.

🦋 🌸 How Charm’s Little Doeling Got Her Name 🌸 🦋

During the first few days after Charm kidded, I spent a lot of quiet time sitting with her and the babies. Every day, there always seemed to be beautiful butterflies nearby. 💛

I remember thinking to myself that maybe these were little Angels reminding me that these precious kids were sent to us so we wouldn’t completely miss kidding season this year during our retirement transition.

As Charm’s little doeling began bouncing and hopping around the stall, I started noticing how much she looked like her mama — especially her soft hair texture and those adorable little hairs sticking out on her thighs just like Charm had as a doeling. 🥹

Something about it reminded me of a little ballerina tutu… and with the butterflies always around, her name suddenly came to me.

🦋 🩰 All En Time’s Butterfly Slippers 🩰 🦋
And her call name will simply be: Slippers 💕

I’ll include a photo of Charm as a doeling beside her little girl from this spring so you can see just how much alike they are.

Barrett, our faithful LGD, is catching up on his beauty sleep this morning after working hard all night keeping watch over the farm. 🐾💤
I could hear him barking through the monitor most of the night, making sure everyone stayed safe. We sure appreciate this big guy and the job he takes so seriously. ❤️🐶

🌸 Charm Spotlight – Milk Production 🌸

This year, for whatever reason, Charm’s kids decided during the first week of lactation that they preferred nursing mostly from one side of her udder. 🐐😄 To help keep her udder balanced, we began milking the other side daily.

Well… Charm reminded us very quickly just how much milk capacity she has. 💛 She was producing nearly two quarts from one side alone!

One of the things I’ve always appreciated about Charm is not only her globular, well balanced udder, but also how productive she is while maintaining such a soft texture and easy milk-out. And at her age, she is still carrying her udder floor above the hocks, which indicates her attachments are holding strong.

Thankfully, her kids decided to take over nursing duties completely before my unexpected emergency gallbladder surgery last week — and for that, I was very grateful.

Charm continues to remind me why she has been such a special doe in our herd all these years.

🌸 Charm Spotlight – General Appearance & Style 🌸

One of the things that has always stood out to me about Charm is her natural uphill stance and walk. She carries herself with such style and balance when moving through the pasture — one of those goats that naturally catches your eye. 💛

Charm’s sharp withers contribute beautifully to her topline and gait, along with her flat shoulders, helping give her that elegant, smooth movement. In Mini Nubians, this can sometimes be a more difficult trait to find and maintain, which is one reason I’ve appreciated it so much in Charm over the years.

She combines that stylish appearance with a calm, affectionate personality that she consistently passes along to her kids. Watching her daughters and sons mature and carry some of those same traits has been one of the rewarding parts of breeding Mini Nubians all these years.

🌸 This Week on All En Time Farm – Spotlight on Charm 🌸

As we continue our retirement journey and work to find the right home for our last buckling, I thought this week I’d share more about his mama, Charm. 💛

Charm is one of those goats that people notice the moment they step onto the farm. There’s just something special about her — from her affectionate personality to her beautiful white spots.

Charm turned 8 this year and has always been an incredibly healthy doe for us — never any issues. I guess some folks have wondered how we missed her pregnancy with such a capacious udder! Honestly, with everything going on during our transition, we simply were not thinking about Charm being pregnant. And Charm has always been one of those girls who sees food and gains weight… kind of like someone else I know 😂

We had actually started thinking she might be developing a precocious udder and were planning a little diet for her. Before we could even implement it, she surprised us by delivering two healthy kids completely on her own the very next day — with absolutely no issues.

Her buckling from this year is:
🐐 All En Time’s Triple Feature Marvel “Trip”
whose sire is our 2025 buckling, All En Time’s Ta-Da!

Trip is truly the continuation of some very special genetics and personalities that we’ve cherished here on the farm for many years.

📸 Be watching this week for Charm posts and photos.

🌿 All En Time Farm Update

Well… crazy things have been happening around here.

I know I promised I would share more about Charm this week—but life had other plans.

On Monday, we disbudded her doeling (and I’m so glad we did, because from there everything went downhill for me). That night, I woke up with a terrible burning in my chest and pain in my stomach. I couldn’t get back to sleep, and by Tuesday morning it was still there—and getting worse. I tried eating breakfast, thinking it might help… it didn’t.

This was actually the third time I’d had this happen—once last January, again last week, and now this week—so I figured it was time to call the doctor and get it checked out. When I told the nurse my symptoms, she said, “Mrs. Allen, you need to get to the ER as soon as you can.”

Well… that wasn’t what I wanted to hear.

But off we went—canceling my plans for the day—and they took me back right away. After a long day of testing (which reminded me a bit of what poor Fancy, my mare, recently went through), they found the issue: multiple gallstones, an inflamed gallbladder, and elevated white blood cells.

Then came the part I really didn’t want to hear…
“Mrs. Allen, the only thing we can do is remove your gallbladder.”

Well… crap.

They had an opening the very next morning, but that meant staying overnight in the hospital—again, not what I wanted to hear. But after two long days, surgery was done, and I’m happy to say everything went well.

I’m finally back home now, healing up—with a very sore tummy—and taking things a bit slower than usual.

Thank you all for your patience. I’ll be sharing more about Charm soon 💛

🐻 And then… my first night home

Well, my first night back home… this happened.

I keep a baby monitor on my nightstand so I can hear the kids if they cry or need help. In the middle of the night, I heard Barrett, our LGD, barking loud and clear through the monitor—and then Bam—our Doodle joined in.

Matt got up, turned on the porch light, and checked outside, but didn’t see anything.

Come morning… we found out exactly what it was.

A bear.

This bear climbed over a temporary fence we had in place, got up onto the porch of the Doe Lounge, and somehow managed to pick up a very heavy container of dog food—with a screw-on sealed lid. Then, as if that wasn’t enough, it carried it back over the fence (how, we still don’t know), across the yard, and into the woods—about 150 feet away.

And yes… it figured out how to open it and enjoy a nice meal.

Matt was able to piece the container back together (it was pretty dented from the adventure), but we’ve since moved it inside—and we’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for Mr. Bear in case he decides to come back!

And through all of this, I can only imagine poor Charm, with her babies all tucked in for the night, hearing all that commotion—I bet she was absolutely petrified trying to keep them safe.

And yet… by morning, the kids were back to playing, full of life and joy, reminding me to slow down and take in these moments.

As we continue this next chapter and prepare for the farm’s transition, we’re also working to find a special home for Sweet Trip, and we would love to see him land in just the right place.

If you feel led, please share—his new farm may be just one connection away. 🐐💛

Just another quiet week here at All En Time… 😅🐐🐻
