Put the yarrow in today.

Yarrow is a great filler flower and is very hardy. It's a perrenial that gets revitalized every couple years here. This past fall we pulled the silage tarp over the bed and today I peeled it back, added some compost, tilthed the bed, and planted.

We've been grafting tomatoes for 7 years. Grafting increases disease resistance and increases fruit yields. It may seem intimidating but its actually a fairly simple process. The plants take about a week to heal after the procedure so you should start your tomatoes a week or so before you would if you weren't grafting because the plants do not grow during the healing process.

Do you graft your tomatoes?

We've been busy here at the farm! I've been leveling and preparing a pad for a "new" propagation house. We are repurposing one of our cat tunnels and turning it into a propagation house. We are shrinking the 50' tunnel down to 24' , shrinking bow spacing to 4', adding 2 more purlins, adding polycarbonate end walls and vents, inflated roof, heat, electricity, and fans. This relatively cheap upgrade is going to be a huge addition to the farm.

-More seedlings and transplants ✔️
-Less hardening-off ✔️
-Less mess and more organization ✔️
-More efficiency seeding and moving trays ✔️

I can't wait to get this house up and running and to share the process with you all.

Cold week ahead... thanks for helping me close up all the low tunnels.

We close our larger tunnel side walls when we are expecting temperatures below 32°F

We close our low cats when we are expecting temperatures below 27°F

Our tunnels are not heated and currently do not have electricity so no HAF fans. Because of this we leave our peak vents open to allow for air flow and ventilation.

We raise the low tunnels every day so the plants can get air flow and sunlight and the soil can heat up better. They are lowered a bout 2 hours before sun set when the temps dictate as above.

Side walls are raised a little every day even with cold temps to allow fresh air exchange. Humidity is the death of winter tunnel crops so ventilation is key.

Running electric to the tunnels is high on my infrastructure list HAF fans, VAF fans, automation, amd inflation are high on my list to make winter growing a little easier.

We've got some cold and then colder temperatures ahead of us in the months ahead but, we're still pressing on with planning, growing, and building.

Outdoor infrastructure projects are on hold while the snow is on the ground so we're taking them inside. Tunnels 2 and 3 will be getting hose trollies set up and main irrigation manifolds installed.

Thanks to growing under cover, bed prep and planting can continue to completed as needed.

Low tunnels are protecting crops both outdoors and in making sure your spring flowers and fruits are happy and healthy.

Forced tulips are rooting. Ranunculus are sprouting. And early season seeding is about to commence.

Book keeping. Crop planning. Enterprise budgets. Grant writing.

There is so much to be done during winter to ensure an early and successful spring launch.
