If you’ve never heard of a pawpaw, you’re missing out! Pawpaws are Virginia’s largest native fruit and produce big, soft fruit with a sweet tropical flavor often compared to banana, mango, and vanilla custard. 🌿

And the best part? They’re native to our area, so these little seedlings are right at home here in Virginia!

Garden haul lately 🌱🍅🌶️🥒

The garden may be starting to slow down a little, but it is still giving! 🙌🏼 We’re still bringing in peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, green beans, yard-long beans, onions, cantaloupe—and my birdhouse gourds are finally starting to grow! 😍

And this is exactly why I love growing our own food. Last night I made Cajun pasta and the oregano, basil, peppers, tomatoes, onions AND garlic all came straight from our garden. 🌿🍅🧄🌶️

There’s something so satisfying about making an entire meal and realizing how many of the ingredients came from right outside your own door.

All those hours planting, watering, weeding and sweating in the garden are absolutely worth it when the kitchen counters start looking like this. 💚

Life in the greenhouse lately 🌿🐝🌼

Things are finally starting to cool off, but that definitely isn’t stopping the greenhouse! Everything is still growing like crazy in here. 🪴

This fall we have a few projects planned to get it ready for winter. We’re going to install a wood stove and replace a few of the windows in certain areas. I’m praying everything holds up well through its first winter! 🤞🏼

The new windows will also be able to open and close, which should give us much better ventilation next summer—something I learned very quickly is a MUST in a greenhouse. 😂

It’s definitely been a learn-as-we-go project, but I love watching this little space change with every season. 💚🌿

🐢💚 From Rescue Search to a New Forever Home 💚🐢

When Addison said she wanted a tortoise, I knew I didn’t want to just go out and buy one. Instead, I started posting in different Facebook groups, looking for a tortoise that needed a new home one that could benefit from coming here and becoming part of our crazy little homestead.

After some searching, we found her. ❤️

And instead of spending that money on purchasing a tortoise, we decided to put it toward making sure the tortoise we rescued would have the best life possible.

So we built her an outdoor environment with room to roam, explore, dig, hide, soak, graze and just be a tortoise. 🐢🌱 She has plenty of space now, and this is only the beginning.

And because she can’t live outside during our Virginia winters, we’ve also been working on her 12×12 winter setup inside the barn, so she’ll have a safe, warm space when the weather turns cold.

This is exactly why I wanted to rescue instead of buy. ❤️
We weren’t just bringing home a tortoise we were giving one a new home and using the money we would have spent on purchasing her to make her new life even better.

Addison has always been my outdoorsy, animal-loving girl, and watching her care so much about her animals makes my heart so happy. She wanted a tortoise, but I think she got something even better a rescue, a responsibility, and a new little homestead buddy to grow with. 🐢💚

I finally had a little time to check in on the greenhouse after being so busy with work lately. 🌿

Looks like my Cape sundews and rosette sundews have been busy while I’ve been gone—I’ve got lots of tiny babies popping up! They’re some of my favorite carnivorous plants to watch grow.

My co**se cactus decided to bloom this week too… and let’s just say you definitely knew it before you saw it. 😂🌸

Most of my evenings are finally free this week, so I’m looking forward to spending some time out in the greenhouse. I’m sure I’ll find plenty of new surprises waiting for me!

I’m at work, but this morning I had a feeling today would be the day. Cami’s ligaments were gone, so I told Riley Ann to keep an eye on her. Sure enough, by 11:00 Riley went down to the barn and found this VERY large baby girl! 🩷🐐

It must be a girl year after all these years of mostly boys! She is absolutely adorable.

LaManchas have always been my favorite breed, but I have to admit… that little brown girl Nellie had the other day has completely stolen my heart. 🥹💕 I haven’t gotten to meet this sweet girl in person yet either, so I can’t wait to get home and love on her.

The other day I came home to find Nellie in labor, with two babies already on the ground and pushing a third! Talk about a surprise! 🐐

I’ve been keeping these sweet babies to myself for a few days, but I couldn’t wait any longer to share them with y’all. They’re absolutely precious and already love all the attention—just like their mama. 🥹💕

We have a few names picked out, but nothing is set in stone yet. Any name suggestions? 👇💚

Harvested the last of our 2026 honey this past weekend! 🍯🐝

Now it’s time to leave the rest for the bees and let them get ready for winter.

We spent yesterday digging up all of our volunteer potatoes, and today we got them all washed, prepped, and tucked away in the freezer. 🥔❄️

One of my favorite ways to preserve potatoes is to parboil or bake them before freezing. It keeps them from turning black, and they cook up beautifully later. On busy nights or when we don’t feel like digging fresh potatoes, they’re ready to go!

We just toss them in a skillet for homemade fried potatoes or throw them in the air fryer for an easy side. It’s such a simple way to make sure nothing from the garden goes to waste and to have a little taste of summer waiting in the freezer. 🌱💚
