Meet Halo Nashry, the first foal out of Covilar Farm's mare Johnnie Merle and now a two-year-old filly starting race training!

Halo Nashry is a Virginia bred, Virginia sired bay filly, foaled February 5, 2024. She brings together two accomplished pedigrees.

Her sire is Snapy Halo, an Argentine-bred Group 1 winner of the Estrellas Mile at San Isidro. He is a son of the great Southern Halo, who led the Argentine sire list ten times and sired 170 stakes winners including 56 Group or Grade 1 winners. Snapy Halo is a full brother to Group 1 winners Sebi Halo and Halo Ola. At stud he produced 26 winners from 45 starters, among them Snapy Gal, winner of the Iowa Breeders' Oaks with earnings over $272,000, Konkeror K., a multiple stakes winner in Panama, and Wilmas Irish Rover, a ten-time winner who set three track records in New Mexico.

Her dam is Johnnie Merle, a mare bred in Ireland by Bernard Cooke and foaled in 2017. Johnnie Merle is by Invincible Spirit, one of the most influential Thoroughbred stallions of the modern era and the European Champion Sire of 2019. An Irish-bred, British-trained racehorse, Invincible Spirit won races including the Duke of York Stakes (Group 3), the Haydock Sprint Cup (Group 1), The MacDonagh Boland Stakes (Group 3), the Hackwood Stakes, and the Ripon Champion 2-y-o Trophy, before becoming a leading sire. He went on to produce 22 individual Group 1 winners worldwide, including Kingman, Moonlight Cloud, Charm Spirit, Lawman, Mayson, and Magna Grecia. Invincible Spirit has sired over 700 winners, including 20+ individual Group 1 winners, and his progeny have collectively amassed well over $110 million in race earnings. His descendants, most notably his champion son I Am Invincible, have also generated well over $90 million in their own progeny earnings.

Halo Nashry also has a half sibling, Invincible General, “Vince,” through Johnnie Merle and Covilar Farm’s premier Thoroughbred stallion, Five Star General.

She is bred for stamina and speed, and it has been exciting to watch her skills develop as she begins to train!

We are having so much fun watching Five Star General’s first foal crop grow up!

It is hard to believe how much these foals have grown and changed in just a few months. Their individual personalities are starting to shine through, and it has been exciting to watch each one develop in their own way.

As a multiple stakes winner with more than $900,000 in career earnings, Five Star General "Ike" made a name for himself with his talent, toughness, and consistency on the racetrack. Today, that legacy as a top race horse is beginning to carry forward through his new role as a Stallion producing the next generation of champions, including General of the Armies, Danzig General, Cairo General, Invincible General, and Afleet General.

We look forward to following the progress of Ike's outstanding brigade of c**ts and watching them continue to thrive at Covilar Farm.

We’re excited to welcome Afleet General to Covilar Farm! Afleet General is a striking chestnut color and the fifth c**t of Five Star General, born May 21st.

Afleet General’s dam, Philly Billy, brings an exceptional pedigree. She is by Dublin (KY), son of Afleet Alex (FL), and out of Time for Karakorum (NY), a daughter of Fly So Free (KY), the American Champion 2-Year-Old C**t and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner.

Fly So Free built an outstanding racing career that established him as one of the top Thoroughbreds of his generation. During his career, he earned more than $2.3 million in purse earnings and compiled an impressive record of 12 wins from 33 starts. As a two-year-old, he captured the prestigious Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Champagne Stakes, performances that earned him Eclipse Award honors as Champion 2-Year-Old C**t. At three, he continued his success with major victories in the Fountain of Youth Stakes, Florida Derby, Hutcheson Stakes, Riva Ridge Stakes, and Jim Dandy Stakes. Known for his speed, strength, and competitive spirit, Fly So Free later became an influential sire, producing multiple graded stakes winners, including Dubai World Cup winner Captain Steve, further strengthening his legacy in Thoroughbred breeding.

Philly Billy’s paternal grandsire is Afleet Alex. Afleet Alex was an American Thoroughbred whose 2005 three-year-old campaign made him one of the most memorable racehorses of the 2000s. He finished third in the Kentucky Derby and followed that with a victory in the Belmont Stakes, taking two-thirds of the Triple Crown and earning the 2005 Eclipse Award for Champion Three-Year-Old Male. During his career, he earned more than $2.7 million in race earnings.

Philly Billy is an impressive racehorse herself, having made 9 starts, earning one win and two runner-up finishes, with races at notable venues like Mountaineer, Charles Town, and Gulfstream Park.

With the combined influence of Philly Billy and Five Star General, Afleet General represents an exciting addition to Covilar’s Owl Hollow Farm family. We are proud to announce the arrival of Invincible General!

The fourth foal by Five Star General, a Kentucky-bred stallion standing at Covilar’s Owl Hollow Farm in Virginia after retiring from racing with career earnings of $902,202!

This bay c**t, with barn name “Vincent” is the second foal by broodmare Johnnie Merle (IRE), a Thoroughbred mare bred in Ireland by Bernard Cooke and foaled April 17, 2017. An elegant and well-built mare that made four career starts and earned a third-place finish, with appearances at Delaware Park, Saratoga, and Fair Grounds.

The new foal is named after his sire, Five Star General, and the stallion Invincible Spirit, Johnnie Merle’s sire and a legendary Irish National Stud stallion who retired in 2024 at the impressive age of 27, cementing his legacy as one of Europe’s premier sources of Group 1 winners. Known for speed and class, he is widely regarded as the greatest stallion to ever stand at the Irish National Stud and has produced more than 22 individual Group 1 winners worldwide.

A true “sire of sires,” his influence continues through top stallion sons including Kingman, Territories, Charm Spirit, Shalaa, and I Am Invincible, as well as Classic winners like Magna Grecia (2,000 Guineas). As of 2024, he also ranks among Europe’s leading broodmare sires, sitting second only to Galileo in the 2024 rankings. His daughters have already produced top performers including Notable Speech (2024 2,000 Guineas) and Victoria Road. Invincible Spirit began his stud career labeled a “speed stallion,” then rose to command six-figure stud fees as he consistently delivered high-class racehorses, including stars such as Kingman, Moonlight Cloud, Fleeting Spirit, and Magna Grecia.

Proud to share another exciting addition to Covilar Farm!

We are thrilled to introduce Cairo General, a striking 2026 bay c**t. He is the first foal from our mare Abidale and the third by Five Star General “Ike”, combining impressive performance, pedigree, and strength. Cairo General is named after his grandfather, Cairo Prince, and his father Five Star General.

Abidale is a Kentucky-bred mare by Cairo Prince and out of November. Racing under Covilar Farm she earned approximately $200,000 with 9 wins from 29 starts. Abidale competed across multiple circuits including Delaware Park, Laurel Park, Monmouth Park, and Parx Racing, with wins acorss several venues.

Abidale comes from an impressive line of racehorses, including Cairo Prince, a son of Pioneerof the Nile, and her dam November, by A.P. Indy, one of the most important stamina influences in modern breeding. Her pedigree is sure to lead to exceptional stregth and energy passed down to Cairo General.

Physically, Abidale stands out as one of the tallest mares in our barn, with a long frame, exceptional leg length, and impressive stride, traits she is already passing on to Cairo General.

Exciting addition at Covilar Farm!

We are thrilled to welcome a new Virginia-sired and Virginia-bred bay c**t to Covilar Farm: Danzig General “DJ”, the second foal sired by Kentucky-bred stallion Five Star General. Ike is now standing at Covilar’s Owl Hollow Farm in Virginia, retired from racing with career earnings of $902,202. DJ’s dam, Luck Be a Lilly, also brings a deep and proven performance lineage to this exciting cross.

Luck Be a Lilly is a grandaughter of Danzig—DJ’s namesake— and Five Star General was sired by Distorted Humor, who also traces back to Danzig, giving DJ strong Danzig influence on both the sire and dam sides. Purchased for $310,000 in 1978, the equivalent of more than $1.4 million today, Danzig won all three of his career starts on his way to becoming one of the most commercially successful sires in modern racing history. He sired 188 graded stakes race winners and 10 champions, with his progeny’s purse earnings exceeding $100 million. A son of Hall of Famer Northern Dancer, Danzig was known for transmitting exceptional speed, athleticism, and physical power, qualities that shaped generations of elite Thoroughbreds.

Danzig’s first crop alone produced three Grade I winners, including Chief’s Crown, the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner and was voted champion two-year-old male. From 1991-1993, Danzig led the American general sires list, first stallion since Bold Ruler in the 1960s to lead the American general sires list three consecutive years. Described as a "universal donor," Danzig passed on his powerful athleticism across continents, with sons such as Danehill, Green Desert, and War Front dominating racing in both Europe and North America.

On DJ’s paternal side, Ike was sired by Distorted Humor out of a Bernardini mare. Distorted Humor was a champion freshman sire, champion general sire, and champion broodmare sire. His runners have earned more than $175 million worldwide, including 76 graded stakes winners.

With powerful Danzig influence on both sides of his pedigree, we have high confidence in DJ’s potentialspeed and grit, and look forward to watching him develop into his athletic promise.

We are proud to introduce the very first foal by Five Star General, a Kentucky-bred stallion standing at Covilar’s Owl Hollow Farm in Virginia after retiring from racing with earnings of $902,202!

Meet General of the Armies, barn name “Black Jack”, a bay c**t born on January 4, 2026. His dam, Stormy Memo, is a California-bred mare by Stormy Atlantic out of graded stakes winner Memorette with career earnings of $896,753.

Black Jack embodies everything we value in Covilar’s thoroughbred breeding program, showing strong pedigree, outstanding conformation, stamina, prime athleticism, and the best traits we hoped to carry into the next generation.

We are thrilled to watch Black Jack grow and develop, and proud to see Five Star General passing on his legacy of a highly successful racing career.
