Starlight Apiaries finally took-off this afternoon, with our first three hives. Thanks to Joe Kimmel who delivered the three nucs to us yesterday afternoon. After opening the nuc entrances and letting the bees fly around and orient themselves to where their new hive-homes would be, installation of the nucs took place this afternoon (in perfect weather, I may add!)

We elected to use 18-20” high tree trunk sections for our hive stands, from some salvaged trees lost in storms a few months ago. We would also like to express our gratitude to our next door neighbor Tim Book (Book's Dairy & Produce) who not only cut the sections for us, but also delivered and set them up, including some for future expansion!

The hives are oriented with entrances facing southeast, in full sun with placement along a tree a tree line that will afford the bees shade from 4:00 PM onward. The primarily evergreen tree line also helps blunt the cold winter W/NW winds.

But the hero of the day was my wife Robin, who never handled any of our bees before, but fearlessly and flawlessly installed all three nucs on her own! Way to go, Robin.

Thanks again, to Robin, Joe & Tim !!!!

In the circle are honeybee eggs. Only the queen bee can lay eggs due to her specialized s*x organs and she can lay around 3,000 per day!

The arrow is pointing to honeybee larvae, or baby bees, which are approx. 8 days old.
