This week, we have a little history for you in 2 parts.

2. While Almar Orchards is spelled 'Almar' now, it was once spelled 'Al-Mar' but Jim decided to drop the hyphen. Why?
Think hard and let us know your best answers and/or guesses, stop in next week for your answers!

Good morning! Here we are for another edition of Jim's Trivia Tuesday!
2 of our biggest pests in our orchards & even conventional orchards are Apple Flea Weevil and Plum Curculio, both of which can be devastating to apple crops if not kept under control.
One thing Jim has noticed over the past 2 years is, the population of both of those pests has been way, way down. Why could that be? We haven't changed our methods much, so that shouldn't be it - with Organic of course we can only control so much and we do allow a certain amount of our apple pests to exist among the trees as is the way of nature. Give us your best guess & stop in next week for Jim's answer!

**** Answer! Jim believes it is the ANT population in the orchards growing back to normal levels over the years since we have been organic, leading to the lower pest levels in the orchards as the ants eat the larvae of the pests. Thank you, ANTS! :)

Wait, stop that scrolling! Take a moment for Jim's Trivia Tuesday!
Which of our apples do White Tail Deer prefer 2 to 1?
Take a guess and stop in next week for the answer!
***Answer! Some of your guessing correctly - it IS Honeycrisp! And it isn't the fruit itself! Somehow, the deer can tell the difference between Honeycrisp leaves and buds and they prefer the flavor! They will walk right past other varieties in favor of Honeycrisp! Go figure! Thanks for playing!

It's that time again! Time for Jim's Trivia Tuesday!
Given that each season is different, what date do YOU think we will begin harvesting our McIntosh apples this Fall?
Give us your best thinking cap answers & tune in next week for the answer!
*** Answer! Good guesses, guys! We are about 2 weeks ahead of schedule this year with the weather we have had so far, so the McIntosh should start to be picked around August 24th, if Jim's mastery of his trees is to be believed and we think it is ;-)

Back for another great week of Jim's Trivia Tuesday!
This week, we have another tough one for you. Friday, April 17th, our whole spraying crew was out in the orchards spraying a mixture of water & Molasses on our trees, why do you think they were doing that? Any thoughts or good/fun guesses?
Stay tuned for those guesses which are always fun & come back next Tues. for the answer!
*Answer time! Those of you who guessed that the molasses water was to help guard against frost were CORRECT! The sugars help protect the blossoms a bit when temps drop down too low.

Welcome to another edition of Jim's Trivia Tuesday!
This one is a bit more of a mystery than our usual.. what do you think we are doing out in the orchard in these photos??
We do this every year around this time, that is all I am allowed to give you as a hint. Come up with your best guess and come back for your answer next week!
**Thank you everyone for all of your great guesses and answers!
Most of your were very correct! These are natural mating disruption rings that we hang in our orchards around this time each Spring to deter Coddling Moth & Oriental Fruit Moths from finding each other and mating. If they can't find each other, then that makes for less moths & a prettier apple crop free of nibble marks, yay! Thanks for playing!

Jim's Trivia Tuesday!
Jim loves to see lots of different kinds of spiders living in his organic orchards. They are one of his major predators killing and eating the billions of "bad guys" in his 100 acres of apple trees and the other 100 acres of his special habitats around those orchards.
These spiders are like the lions and tigers in the jungle but much smaller and in fact, some are so small you can hardly see them!
How many different types of spiders do you think live on Jim's Organic Orchard & fields?
Hint, much more than on a chemically managed orchard.
Tune in next week for the answer and another fun trivia question!
**David got it right! There are between 350-500 species of spiders on our orchard fighting the good fight to keep our fruits looking and tasting delicious! Thanks for playing!
