Lady bugs can look pretty mean - I tried to not to kill any bugs on my plants unless I can identify them. The large majority of bugs don't cause any issues to plants or fruit and many help. Some of the good guys can look pretty rough in different stages of life. This picture of my cucumbers shows aphids (square) being fed on by a lady bug larva (circle).

A few new items on this week I will have at The Lafitte Street Farmers Market in Mandeville tomorrow. Green beans and cucumbers will be on for a while. Both are the best I have ever tasted! I also have new red potatoes harvested a few days ago. The potatoes will only be sold for a short time as I keep most for us. Amazing how much better these taste compared to anything you purchase in stores.

Two of the biggest pest in my garden that mainly impact my squash were on the same leaf the other day. The squash vine borer is the one that looks like a red wasp. It will lay eggs usually on the stem of the plant closer to the ground. The larvae then bores into the stem and begins to eat the core creating a sawdust looking frass on the stem. You will see the plant suddenly die but the larvae has been at work for a while. The bug in the shadow towards the top is a squash bug that is laying eggs. The bug pierces the plant sucking out the plants sap which eventually kills all the leaves. I will squish the eggs if I see them. I don't use any pesticides (even organic ones) so I cover plants with insect netting until they start flowering then uncover so the fruit can get pollenated. I do succession planting so I have some plants coming on when others are starting to die off.
