In the Spokane Valley, there is a business called Marle Worm Growers. They specialize in organic custom soil mixes and all things to do with worm composting.

We loaded up the pickup truck with their dahlia growing mix. Our goal is that over time by adding high quality organic matter to our areas of clay, we will improve the tilth of our soil.

In this row that we amended with the dahlia soil blend, we are planting Coorabelle Jessie rooted cuttings. Some of the earliest cuttings have gotten pretty big and are starting to form baby tubers!

Just received the last three of my Stonehouse rooted cuttings. RM Rose Gold, RM Mirage and RM Dragons Blood. They are beauties!

We are almost done planting. What a job!

In order to plant out first year seedlings a bit early, we use this LowCat tunnel system with a frost protection cover. During the day, the cover will be pulled up on the sides to provide sunlight and airflow to the plants. At night or during a spring storm, the cover will be pulled down in order to protect the tender seedlings. This set up is temporary and will be removed when the plants are larger and the weather settles down.

We have a few seedlings that are already budding!

Garlic is relatively fuss free. It doesn't require much attention or much watering. It does like a good topdressing of all purpose fertilizer in the spring. We chose Bio-Live organic fertilizer by Down to Earth.

This year we are growing twenty different types of garlic. Most of our varieties are hardneck. Three are softneck of which two are artichoke type.

To help control disease and improve soil health, we rotate our crops at the farm. This garden space was planted in dahlias last season.

In two or three weeks we will begin to plant this newly prepared garden space with dahlia tubers.
We will add bone meal, worm castings and a little more alfalfa meal along with the tubers.
Our rooted cuttings will be planted and covered with a LowCat tunnel system to protect them from spring winds and heavy rain. When they are strong, the tunnel system will be removed.
We are looking forward to a beautiful growing season!
