Meet Vinnie. After we lost our wonderful polish rooster, Tito, a few months ago we wanted another. Vinnie was supposed to be a Polish, but he's actually a Sultan. 🤦‍♀️ We decided he needed to come home with us anyway. We may have to hatch some just for fun to see what they look like. Poor guy isn't even as big as the Polish hens. However, he thinks he's bigger than he is. He's settling in and will fit right in. And new friends were made in the process! Win, win for everyone.

When you are in that awkward teenager phase and really aren't that cute! 😂 Our only polish hatch this year, and was hen hatched. 99% sure it's a rooster and will be looking for a few ladies of his own. 10 weeks old this week. Message us for details. He does like his head and neck scratches. 🥰

Last year, our corn did not do well. This year, it is small (one of the varieties we chose), and it looks like it didn't pollinate well, but we are so excited. Yesterday, we harvested 37 ears. Today, we blanched it and froze it off the cob. It gave us 2 lbs. 10 Oz. There's still more that wasn't ready. Now, if we could get a bit cooler weather so the tomatoes will turn.

Mom and baby are so sweet. Dolly is the sweetest bird ever. This is her second year's going broody. I love how baby rides around on her back. She's such a good mom. She actually hatched 3 more while in the coop, but they didn't make it. So, before the last one hatched, we moved her inside. Baby is about a week old now, and they're doing well. Our "bird room" is currently full. The half room brooder that is in 3 sections has Dolly and baby in 1, 4 guinea fowl keets in another (they're going outside tomorrow hopefully), and an injured bird in another.

We had a raccoon tear off the nesting box lid to our polish blue/ black/ splash coop yesterday. It happened during the day because they were all fine in the morning, but checking on them in the early evening, we found 4 hens and a rooster killed. Another black polish hen is pretty seriously injured. All her neck feathers are missing, some tail feathers missing, scratches on her eye and face area, and her left beast is ripped open. Thankfully, her crop is in tact. Consulted the vet this morning, and he doesn't think stitches would hold, and believes the large, gaping hole will heal, and nothing major is exposed or damaged. So, she is inside with pain medicine, antibiotics, and prayers. Raccoons are so smart and stronger than you'd think, and they are brutal. A new stronger nesting box lid is on, and things tightened up a bit because they'll likely be back. It is amazing what chickens can heal from. We are praying this sweet hen makes it.

Do you want to grow some of your own food but don't know where to start? Don't have the space or time for a garden? Just start. It doesn't have to be big. You can grow a lot of things, even in an apartment. The micro tomato plants Orange Hats only need a 8"-9" pot and produce prolifically. Herbs like the Dill and Basil here grow well in pots. And lettuce, oh the lettuce! You can also succession plant these things so you have a constant supply. You can even grow these things year round in the house. It is a great feeling to go out to your front porch and pick your lettuce and tomatoes grown without being treated with chemical fertilizer and pesticides to make a salad. What will you start growing?
