Ceylon teas are black teas grown in Sri Lanka, formerly called Ceylon. Our Lover's Leap Single Estate Ceylon comes from the Nuwara Eliya area, one of Sri Lanka's highest tea-growing regions located 6,000 feet above sea level. The cooler temperatures at that elevation concentrate the tea’s forest aroma and highlight its light citrus taste and golden color. The tea’s name comes from a fable in which 2 lovers are forbidden to marry and, rather than be separated, they leapt together off the cliff above waterfall located on the estate. Special batches of this tea were said to have been enjoyed by Queen Elzabeth to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee. Enjoy a cup if what is often called the Champagne of Ceylon teas as summer lingers.

Time for another tea trivia post. Honeybush, also known as Heuningbosis, is a shrub that grows in the Eastern and Western Cape regions of South Africa and is related to Rooibos. It is caffeine-free and has a honey-like flavor and scent. Its leaves and stems are harvested, crushed and allowed to oxidize, either in the sun or in heated tanks to create the tea. Brewing this tea is a fragrant experience. Traditionally, the Honeybush tea was only harvested for home use but in recent years it has become a commercially cultivated product as more and more herbal tea lovers discover it. Todd and Holand has a very special blend, Honeybush Chocolate Torte, which combines the naturally sweet tea with chocolate, caramel and rosebuds for a perfect desert or an indulgent afternoon break.

If you cannot sit outside, you can at least enjoy our cocktail inspired teas inside watching the rain. We have packaged three teas together and called it Happy Hour. It includes our Piña Colada, a white tea flavored with shredded coconut and pineapple bits and our Ginger Lime Rickey, a tisane made from green rooibos along with ginger, lemongrass and licorice root as well as our white tea based Champagne Raspberry.

You can make your own mocktails by brewing our hibiscus flowers to make a ½ cup of tea and then blending the chilled brew with an equal amount of orange juice and club soda or sparkling water (1/2 cup each). Add a one TBL of honey or maple syrup if you like your tea cocktail sweet. Serve over ice.

We are at the height of the summer fruit season with mangoes and figs filling produce aisles. Mangoes are available year round imported from tropical countries but mangoes from Florida and California are at their peak. Figs also are imported from regions around the Mediterranean but those grown in California’s Central Valley are available now. And we have two amazing teas that also contain these fruits. Our Midsummer Night is a delicate oolong tea with mango sugar cubes and the addition of rose petals while our Carmel Pear-fection offers a stronger black tea with fig and caramel bits as well as rose petals, rosemary and prickly pear. Treat yourself to summer’s bounty with one of our amazing fruit flavored teas.

Nothing works better to stir sugar into your iced tea than an iced tea spoon, but where did iced tea spoons come from? It seems that flatware manufacturers saw a way to rebrand parfait spoons used to eat a popular late 1800’s desert from France made with layers of ice cream, fruit syrup and whipped cream. In the early 1900’s Americans, having ‘discovered’ the pleasures of iced tea, began to buy specialized tall glasses for the beverage as this ad from the 1950’s suggests and the need for longer spoons followed. We have our own spin on iced tea spoons with a selection of designs and colors.

Mosquitoes are everywhere this summer; the media suggests that Chicago is one of the worst cities in the U.S. for mosquito activity. Whether you use an insect spray, a portable fan, or a citronella candle, you will end up with a bite. But, you may have an itch-relieving item in your kitchen.

Teas (black and green) contain tannic acid, an anti-inflammatory compound that can restrict blood flow and relieve the itch. Simply place the tea bag on the bite for relief. Store a few used tea bags in a container in your fridge, and you can enhance the soothing effect. If you regularly drink chamomile tea, those flowers also have antioxidant and antihistamine properties and can be used in a similar way.

Tea canisters have been a part of Japanese tea culture for centuries. Often used in Japanese tea ceremonies, they are considered to play a role in the aesthetics of the ceremony. We offer an amazing variety of airtight containers, perfect for storing tea to prevent exposure to light, air, or moisture, and ensuring that your tea retains its quality while also preventing oxidation. Opening the container allows you to inhale the aroma of the tea leaves and adds a special ritual preparing your first cup of tea each day.
