Okay. I know it’s been a while, but a lot has changed in the last year, and we had to take some time to recalibrate and figure out how all this stuff fit into our new crazy schedules. Turns out it didn’t much. So when we started last year with too many birds (once again), I was immediately too busy with our feathered friends and new adventures in life to even think about a garden.

By the end of last year we knew we needed to make a decision about what really worked for us and what didn’t. So, we decided to step away from the poultry game in favor of a vegetable garden. Like…a day before became $12 a dozen. 🤦‍♀️

But it’s fine. We’re fine. Everything’s fine.
🔥 😅 🔥

This year’s garden is an exercise in restraint. Did I want to plant every square inch of soil? Absolutely. And even though an annoying little part of me kept saying “maybe it’ll keep the weeds down,” I knew I needed to plant a manageable amount of that we will actually use. Plus some to freeze/can for winter. Plus a little to share. And maybe one or two items that are just for funzies. 😬

It helped to plant lots of vining plants that will absolutely need that empty space. Whether or not I went overboard with the remains to be seen, but I consider it a healthy coping mechanism, so I went full tilt and bordered almost the entire garden with them. 🌻

With all this in mind, I present to you the newly humbled 2025 :

The are showing themselves early! I don’t know about you, but I’m extremely intimidated by these tail fans. And the way they hold their wings out and puff themselves up so they look almost as big as a couple of squirrels? Very impressive.

The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. We are clearly not there yet. 😅

My hubby and I swore up and down that we would not get any more chickens this year. We didn’t place any orders. We haven’t let anyone brood. We even rehomed 10 of our 50 flock members and vowed to harvest 15 or so this spring.

We did not, however, discuss turkeys. 🤦‍♀️

Like most things I experiment with, my adventure in growing has only served to convince me I’m not cut out for . This mild mix I planted was growing beautifully, and I was hoping to have it ready for market next week, but it turns out we have a complicated sort of I have no idea how to handle. Her name is Oreo, and I used to love her. 😅

True to her attitude, she saw that she could in fact fit, and so she did sit. All 12lbs of her self snuggled up onto this soft bed of sweet and mild microgreens, and smushed them down into the sweetest, softest, bed of still growing and now unusable, fur-laced produce.

I worried over many things as I planted these little brassicas, but this was not one of them, proving once again that my is an utterly useless tool against the world.

BRB while I go start EVERYTHING again, in a new location that will definitely be protected from the . I’ll be sure to let you know what other complications arise. 🫠
