Wood chips are a major input on the farm. They fill the walkways between the beds and keep our chickens happier and healthier. Keeping the walkways topped with wood chips allows for not only better control of moisture throughout the year, allowing water to move in the winter and moisture to stay in the ground during the summer, but they also are a breeding ground for many insects and a plethora of beneficial fungi. For the chickens, it’s a deep bedding goldmine. When the chickens are kept on a deep layer of wood chips (or other carbon material) their waste gets worked into the mix when they scratch around. This keeps the manure load under control and over time will make beautiful compost right under their feet. Although this compost gets set aside and will continue to break down for a while before use to make sure it’s safe for the garden.

Just because we haven’t posted for a little bit doesn’t mean things haven’t been happening around the farm. We have tomatoes in ground in the tunnel including the once extinct Giant Crimson from . Since we are farming such limited space we are relaying the tomatoes in one bed with lettuce that’s on its way out. This is a technique we learned from Jesse to keep the soil photosynthesizing, while not wasting any bed space. We direct seeded some quick crops in the vacant space in the other tomato beds for the record, they just look empty.

Using organic seeds in the garden can make a big difference in the overall health of the plants you grow. They are saved from plants grown organically so the parent plants are able to grow without the aid of chemicals and synthetic fertilizers. This means the plants in your garden are easier to grow without the use of such harsh compounds. We have noticed a significant difference in our plants health when compared to non-organic seeds. Another way to help your plants succeed is use a polyculture mindset and interplant various crops together. They help hide and protect each other from various pests and occasionally benefit from each other underground like making mychorizal associations for plants who generally don’t make these connections on their own. I’m not necessarily well versed in this or an expert by any means, but Jesse Frost from is. If you’re interested in this stuff check out his book The Living Soil Handbook. This has been a go to information source for us since last fall and a major basis for how we built the farm.

We pride ourselves on growing food as naturally as we can. This not only allows us to build healthier, more resilient soil but allows all kinds of beneficial bacteria, fungal life, insects, and animals to thrive. Working with nature for the health of our soil, our surroundings, and our people. There’s still a lot to learn and room for growth but we love it.

Plum flowers are underrated, am I right? I feel like one of the hardest parts about farming sometimes is remembering to take in the beauty of the farm. It’s easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle.

Strawberries are in! We flipped one of our beds and prepped it for bare root strawberries from . This triples the number of strawberries we are growing and we couldn’t be more excited. The variety is Seascape and we’ve had great luck with it so far.
