It’s been a pretty wild turkey week over here at Jodar Farms. Started the week off with the final turkey harvest before Thanksgiving, chose one lucky male turkey to head down to the Colorado Governor’s Mansion for a luxury 1 nights stay and pardon, and tomorrow we begin distributing turkeys for Thanksgiving day. I’ve cleaned a lot of turkeys in my day, but this was the first time I gave one a foot and tail feather bath finished with a hair dryer (had to calm him down with some treats)! But it was quite the honor getting to take our family to the state capitol for the night and meeting our Commissioner of Ag and Governor Polis. We do still have a few birds left for sale, so it’s not too late to get one on order!!

This might be my corniest post yet, but wanted to let you all know we will have Organic Sweet Corn at the farm store tomorrow 10am-2pm. Our neighbors at the Wellington Farm, the Becksted Family, have grown an amaizeing crop they’d like to share with you all. The corn is starting to pop this week and will peak in the next 7-10 days…. So stock up this week and next…. Great opportunity to freeze some corn for the winter ;) Oh and here’s a little kernel of history. Once upon a time, the Becksted family farmed on the very ground we now raise our chickens and pigs on out in Wellington.

Happy Father’s Day to all the Dad’s out there. I hope you get some rest, a new pair of white NB’s and some fresh socks and wh**ey tighties! For those of you who don’t know him, this is Grandpa Doug, aka Don Diego…. And the namesake of Jodar Farms. A retired Ft. Collins Police Officer and long time retail grocery man, but most importantly he’s quite the grandpa and quite the Dad. Much of the farm you see today is built from the foundation he and my mom created 30+ years ago when they moved out to the countryside to “play”. He’s been at my side since day 1 helping out. Whether it’s been strawing pigs in during a freak May rain storm, catching chickens in a blizzard, waking up early to light the scalder, working long days on the farm only to head off to work at job #2, and countless other times he saved@my butt. Some people say he might be generous to a fault, but I can’t think of a better guy to learn how to be a Dad from. Don’t get me wrong, working with your Dad can have it’s challenges, but there is no one I’d rather have at my side on the farm!
Thanks for everything Dad!

‘Tis I, Aaron of House Rice, Chickenherd and Swineherd of Farm Jodar. First of my name, breaker of ice, collector of eggs.
Hear me brothers and sisters, for winter is here, but the long thaw is coming.
It is said every good axe needs a name. What shall I call this one? Ice breaker?! Orangey?! What say you!?!

Maybe been watching a little too much GOT lately…have a good day :)

Happy Monday!
Just a quick check in and some updates.
First things first... everyone did great through the extreme cold snap in December. It always amazes me how resilient and tough those pigs are. A lot of straw in the "hobbit houses" made for snug pigs!

Now let's talk EGGS. It appears the world is in a bit of shock with the egg situation playing out in the grocery stores. With the intersection of multiple factors (avian flu, commodity prices, state regulation changes and just about all input costs rising) the grocery store shelves are limited and prices have shot up. This is a result of an industry that is dominated by a few large corporations and the factory farms that they own. If only there were other options out there....

IF you're looking for an alternative that is LOCAL and more reliable than these big egg producers.... look no further! We have A LOT of EGGS and plan to have them all winter long.... and... We do still Winter CSA shares available (CSA members are serviced 1st) that last through April 2023! The Winter CSA is one of the most important programs we offer, as it is the financial lifeblood for our farm in those lean and cold months. We are going to close memberships at the end of January, so we hope you join us soon!

In addition, we have had extra eggs each week available through our online farm store for non-members. You can also find pastured pork, grass fed beef and wild caught Alaskan Salmon on the site.

Oh and in case you're wondering....Our egg price... $6.75/dzn
