It’s microbe food.

Healthy soil is alive with bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, and countless other organisms. These tiny workers break down organic matter and make nutrients available to plants.

Compost feeds that entire underground community.

Organic matter.

Bare soil dries out faster.
Erodes easier.
Heats up more.
Loses life.

Covering soil is one of the most foundational regenerative practices.

That can look like:

But one of the most important skills costs nothing:

Paying attention.

Watch where water pools after rain.
Notice which spots dry out first.
See where frost lingers in spring.
Notice which plants look happy without much effort.

These observations tell you more than any product label ever could.

Good gardeners aren’t the ones who know everything.

Stop Fighting Your Soil Type

One of the most freeing moments in gardening is realizing you don’t need to “fix” your soil.

Clay soil.
Sandy soil.
Rocky soil.

None of them are broken.

Each soil type has strengths. Each has challenges. Regenerative gardening starts by working with what you have instead of trying to turn it into something else.

Clay soils hold nutrients well but can struggle with drainage.
Sandy soils drain quickly but benefit from added organic matter.

Neither is wrong.

Adding compost, mulch, and organic matter over time improves any soil type. Not overnight. Not in one season. Slowly.

They remember the climate they were grown in.
They remember the stresses they survived.

Seeds produced locally or regionally are often better adapted to your conditions than seeds shipped from far away.

That means:
• Better germination
• Stronger plants
• Less struggle

When possible, look for:
Local seed companies
Seed swaps
Garden clubs
Neighbors who save seed

Over time, you can even begin saving seed from plants that perform well in your own garden.
