Crazy Legs Farm

Crazy Legs Farm Pure Bred Romney Sheep - Livestock, fleece, roving, blankets, yarn. Most of my rams have come from Joanne Smith,Bear Mountain Farm of West Rupert, Vermont.

Crazy Legs Farm is home to a “colorful” purebred Romney sheep flock in the rolling, shale hills of the southern Fort Edward township. Our sheep enjoy a natural life browsing and grazing scenic pastures on this “re-purposed” farmland while providing us with natural fiber for yarns and blankets, meat, quality livestock and composted garden manure. They are a major part of our pursuit of a self-suffi

cient lifestyle and keep our farm heritage alive. I have been breeding Romneys for eleven years and have selected breeding stock based on confirmation, temperment, and fleece quality. This year's lambs are sired by a ram from Christine Johnson, Groton, New York. Both rams are from lines with winning fleeces at Rhinebeck Fleece & Wool show! We sell livestock - both ram & ewe lambs and yearlings. Three yearling wethers are available, too. Fleece, roving, yarns (natural & dyed are available. We sell beautiful natural color, paid wool blankets made in conjunction with Warm Woolens & lovely herringbone pattern blankets made by Battenkill Fiber. Call ahead for a visit. We are on the Washington County Fiber Tour
April 26 & 27 - 10-4 both days!

Snowstorms bring lambs! There will only be a few (lambs) this year but they will be special. Their handsome sire “Outlander” is now in a breeding flock of MacKenzie VanKlompenburg in Michigan.

Their dam “Patty” now nine, has been shown every year (except 2025) at Washington County Fair. She’s been a great partner for several of the
Crazy Leg Farm show team. She’s given us some really nice offspring over the years including Pattycake, Peppermint, Patrick, Paige, Pearl, Pearlman, Patina, Perfect, Patriot, PBS, Penelope, Pennylane, Pollyanna!

A couple more P’s in the pod….a ewe and a ram lamb.

The seeds of a summer market season are planted in the winter! Even though it feels far from farmer's market weather, we are preparing for our 2026 markets in Fort Edward, NY right now.

We are accepting applications from farmers and artisans who want to join us this year. If you grow it or make it here, you can sell it at our marketplace!

On a farm, the cyclical nature of this way of life makes it impossible to say where a new year begins or ends. One year is like the year before it…at least it has been in regards to growing crops to provide feed for livestock. On our small Romney sheep farm, I appreciate the natural cycles of our flock and fields and I’m content with that.

Except….there are major changes in the climate…natural & political…that are frightening. Well, we all want so much…I’m afraid apathy/ignorance/greed will make those things that unify us, divide us.

But on a farm….there’s humility and humanity and community. After weeks of early cold and snow (and semi-hibernation) the hours of daylight are growing longer and a it does seem like the beginning of a cycle.

For 25 years, Fred DePaul has sheared for us….and entertained us with stories and shared a meal. Friends and family have helped. Liz, Barb & Kate
keep me going. And Liz has captured the essence of our sheep world. The sheets used to wrap fleeces after shearing have dates and names going back years…my diary of sheep & shear dates.

Yes, we shear in January. We are fortunate to have this early January thaw and temperatures into the forties while the sheep adjust to their new look.
Shearing is totally non-stressful for the sheep and a very healthy policy
pre-lambing season for shepherd, ewes and lambs. I love their look in full fleece and love to see their structure once sheared. And now I have some lovely fleeces at the Woolhouse to skirt and assess as we wait on lambing season.

We had such a great weekend at the Adirondack Wool and Arts Festival! Perfect weather, lots of great customers and conversations, a great Cashmier Goat Show Saturday followed by a great sheep show on Sunday, music, sheep shearing, good food, great friends….well, it was just great.

I love wool and all the products that can be produced from wool. But most of all I love the sheep. And showing - especially with the kids. I was overwhelmed to be chosen for the Champion White Ewe of the show award with Pollyanna (and Anneke) and the Champion Natural Colored Ewe of the show with Naya. It’s truly a treasured experience with so many fine animals and exhibitors in the ring today!

Many thanks to returning and new customers and to all those who made it run smoothly. Thanks for the photos Barb & Robert.

Color is all around us this weekend! Although an extreme drought in the northeast is draining the brightness from the fall foliage, local festivals ie The Adirondack Balloon Festival (Queensbury, NY) and The Adirondack Wool & Arts Festival (Greenwich, NY) will be brilliant!

Crazy Legs Farm will be there (ADK Wool) with sheep and kids for the show on Sunday 10 AM. And also as a vendor selling “maker’s” needs for fiber arts from beautiful raw fleeces, washed locks, roving (natural & dyed), yarns (fingerling, DK, worsted weights) to finished products. “Barn” scarves, MacAusland blankets, sheepskins, drier balls, wool pellets and Barb’s woven rugs fill out our display this year.

Over 100 fabulous vendors will be there plus food and music with easy parking.

Come see us! September 20 & 21, 10-4…..Barn 1.

I always have to ruminate a bit after the fair (Washington County, Greenwich, NY). So many things at home get left undone while prepping for fair and particularly this year with extreme weather conditions affecting gardens and crops…the very sustenance of farms. But it was an excellent fair….dairy, beef, sheep, goats, poultry, rabbits, horses….all there in abundance.

The fair may seem frivolous to many and many things about it are….it surely brings all kinds of people together. But to exhibitors, the drive to breed better animals, grow better flowers and veg, catch a better photo, sew, knit, paint, create a better project….keeps us moving forward. To gather & compete and celebrate each others’ achievements is earthy and emotional….good stuff.

It’s a bit of an emotional year for me as I continue to downsize my flock and wonder if we can do it next year…maybe at a smaller scale. I am so proud of this group…the Show Team of Thirteen….and their parents. We’ve worked hours training sheep for the few minutes in the show ring. We’ve shared the dirty job of washing sheep. We’ve learned body parts, nutrition and health and some are beginning to clip and do some “fitting”. Some may be moving on to cows….my first love.

We had many wins and champions in the junior show including Reserve All- Breed ewe (Maeve with Naya), Reserve Master Showman (Anneke with Pollyanna), Champion ram (Owen with Outlander). They were all winners in my opinion….everyone had learned so much and presented the sheep so well for two long days of showing. Open class had some nice wins, too. The last class had ten of us in the ring at once with two “flocks”. I could not have been more proud of that display!

The Washington County Fair….my how time flies! Many, many thanks to my niece Liz Donaldson for chronicling our years at the fair….capturing everyone or capturing moments. It’s not all fun and games…but a lot of it is.
And memories…here’s a few…we’ll be missing you this year, Declan!
