A little operations update from the sugarwoods and the sugarhouse:
While all three of us were out pulling taps, our eldest officially closed out the season this evening by pulling the very last tap. It was wet, muddy, and rainy from start to finish, but we managed to wrap everything up before the thunderstorm rolled in overhead.
Now the focus shifts toward next season already. Inventories are complete for this year’s tubing expansion project, and it looks like we have most of what we need lined up and ready to go. Soon we’ll be back out in the woods clearing new routes, opening up lines, and preparing for another round of tubing installation deeper into the forest.
On the product side of things:

Our Creamy Maple Candies are now live on the website:
https://www.northernreachmaple.com/product/creamy-maple-candies/
We’re continuing to fine-tune our batches and processes to make these the best they can possibly be 😁 While they’re currently available for backorder, we’ll continue updating inventory as fresh batches are completed.

We’re also now offering 5 LB bags of Pure Maple Sugar at a more economical price point (for bulk users like bakeries) compared to the smaller 6 oz and 1 LB packages:
https://www.northernreachmaple.com/product/maple-sugar/

And finally… the next specialty syrup flavor is already on the horizon. No contest or guessing game this time — we have a pretty strong feeling this one is going to be an immediate fan favorite.
Beyond that, we also have a couple more products steadily making their way through the R&D pipeline.

As always, thank you all for following along and supporting what we do here in Northern Maine — there’s always something new brewing, boiling, infusing, or being built out in the woods.

Today we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. On this Memorial Day, we extend our deepest gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice so future generations could enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted.
As we gather with family and friends this holiday, may we also take a moment to reflect on the courage, dedication, and selflessness of our fallen heroes. From all of us at Northern Reach Maple, thank you to those who served — and those who never made it home. 🇺🇸

Sometimes the biggest upgrades on a maple farm aren’t shiny new evaporators or stacks of syrup bottles — sometimes it’s the equipment that helps make the woods ready for the next generation of maple production.
Before we can install new tubing lines, we spend countless hours clearing thick understory “puckah” brush by hand. The faster option is bringing in larger logging equipment for thinning and crop-tree release work, but heavy skidders and forwarders can compact soils and damage the root systems of growing maple trees if you’re not careful. That’s why we decided to try something in the middle: a compact track loader. The tracks spread out the machine’s weight, helping minimize ruts and soil compaction while still making understory clearing dramatically faster.
So…we took a gamble on a used track loader and paid probably about a quarter of what a new machine would cost. Honestly, I expected this thing to sit in front the shop for a month while we tore into an engine rebuild and sent the head out for machining. Instead, after an afternoon of tinkering, troubleshooting, and giving it some much-needed TLC…we brought it back to life!
There’s still more work to do before it’s fully field-ready, but this machine is already looking like a huge win for us. Faster tubing installs, less strain on the woods, and getting ahead of schedule before next season’s expansion work even begins. Sometimes the best farm days are the ones where an old machine decides it’s not done working yet 🚜🌲🍁

Update: Forgot to mention! If you're looking for some of the Toasted Coconut or Bourbon Barrel aged in the PI area, Graves Shop n Save and Hillside IGA, Mars Hill IGA, Star City IGA (Star City IGA in particular) are stocked up in addition to the other products we currently produce!

All deliveries and reseller restocks wrapped up for the day! 💪🍁

Meanwhile over at Easton Elementary, Cyndi Kymball, Toni, and Crystal Ferris were in the kitchen cooking up some absolutely mean maple syrup sweetened waffles for the kids. I was lucky enough to try one while it was still warm, and honestly they tasted like one of those famous “Irish” breakfast sandwiches fresh off the griddle 😉

I definitely don’t remember school meals being this good growing up. While I’m a little jealous of what these kids get to eat these days, it’s awesome seeing local farm-produced ingredients being turned into meals like this and so many other creative school dishes.

Another 30+ gallons bottled, labeled, and ready for delivery to Aroostook County schools this Wednesday! 🍁🥞

While grading syrup for bottling, I may have “quality tested” a few of the grading samples along the way… and if the students are getting this poured over yogurt, granola, pancakes, or whatever their food directors are dreaming up, they are definitely in for a treat 😁

It’s pretty special knowing local Maine maple syrup will be making its way onto lunch trays across the county!

What a weekend at LoggerFest!
A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth, sampled syrup, chatted with us, and supported Northern Reach Maple during the festivities. The event was put together exceptionally well, and we definitely lucked out with front row seats to most of the action happening throughout the day — there was never a dull moment!

One thing became very clear: the creamy maple soft candies were a massive hit. We officially sold out during the event, so it looks like it’s time to get back into the kitchen and make another batch. We’re also going to explore getting them added to the website so more folks can get their hands on them even after festival season wraps up.

We’re also working on getting our new Toasted Coconut Maple Syrup distributed out to participating resellers shortly, so keep an eye out.

Thank you again to everyone who came out and made LoggerFest such a great experience for us. We appreciate every conversation, every purchase, and every bit of support for our little maple operation here in Northern Maine! 🍁
