First, a big thank you to everyone who has stopped by for pickups and self-serve purchases from the fridge in front of the sugarhouse. We truly appreciate your support!
We know cell service can be a little unpredictable out here in the North Maine Woods, so we've made a few improvements to make your visit easier:
📋 Updated Price List – We've added our newer products and specialty items so you can easily see everything currently available.
📶 Wi-Fi Information – Need internet while you're here? We've posted our guest Wi-Fi details right on the front of the fridge.

The coming week is shaping up to be a busy one around Northern Reach Maple. We'll be spending time making maple sugar, bottling fresh batches of pure maple syrup, and...
🥁 drumroll please.....getting our next specialty maple syrup flavor packaged up and ready for release!
We're excited to share it with you soon, and we think you're going to love what we've been working on.
As always, thank you for supporting local, family-made maple products from the peak of the North Maine Woods.

The Taste of Place
Wine lovers have a word for it: terroir.
Terroir describes how a product's environment—its climate, soil, elevation, and surrounding ecosystem—shapes its unique character and flavor. It's why wines from different regions can taste remarkably different, even when made from the same grape varieties.
The same principle applies to maple syrup.
Every spring, our syrup begins as sap collected from maple forests at the peak of the North Maine Woods. Long, cold winters, deep snowpack, clean air, and healthy stands of sugar and red maples all contribute to the character of the syrup produced here. The unique conditions of our northern forest help create a flavor profile that reflects the place it comes from.
Maple syrup isn't simply a sweetener—it's the concentrated essence of a forest and a season.
When you enjoy a bottle of Northern Reach Maple syrup, you're tasting more than maple. You're experiencing the landscape, climate, and the wilderness of northern Maine in every drop.

Maple Season Meets Grilling Season
Maple syrup isn't just for pancakes.
As grills fire up across the country, maple syrup becomes one of the most versatile ingredients in the outdoor kitchen. Its natural sweetness pairs perfectly with smoke, spice, and char, creating flavor combinations that elevate everything from ribs and chicken to seafood and vegetables.
One of our favorite summer uses? A rack of slow-smoked ribs finished with a glaze made from our Bourbon Barrel-Aged Maple Syrup. The rich maple flavor, combined with notes of oak, vanilla, and caramel from the barrel-aging process, creates a glaze that caramelizes beautifully and adds depth to every bite.
Looking for something a little different? Our Toasted Coconut Maple Syrup makes an incredible glaze for grilled chicken. The subtle coconut notes complement the smoky flavors from the grill while adding a touch of tropical sweetness that's perfect for summer cookouts.
Whether you're glazing, marinating, or building your own barbecue sauce, maple syrup brings complexity and character that ordinary sweeteners simply can't replicate.
Maple season may be over, but grilling season is just getting started.
What's your favorite thing to put on the grill?

🍁 Is Maple Sugar the Healthiest Sweetener? 🍁
When most people think of maple syrup and maple sugar, they think of pancakes and waffles. But pure maple products are much more than just a sweet treat.
Unlike refined white sugar, maple sugar retains naturally occurring minerals, antioxidants, and plant-based compounds that are produced by maple trees themselves.
In fact, a comprehensive review published through the U.S. National Institutes of Health noted that maple syrup contains phenolic compounds associated with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic, and anticancer activities.
Even more interesting is how maple compares to other sweeteners. Research published in the Journal of Functional Foods found that maple syrup produced lower glucose and insulin responses than dextrose, corn syrup, and brown rice syrup. The study concluded that maple syrup represents a healthier natural alternative to refined sugars.
✅ Rich in naturally occurring antioxidants
✅ Contains beneficial minerals such as manganese and zinc
✅ Less processed than refined white sugar
✅ Lower glucose and insulin responses than several common sweeteners
✅ Unique plant compounds found only in maple products
While no added sugar should be consumed without moderation, the science increasingly suggests that pure maple sugar and maple syrup may be among the most nutritionally beneficial sweeteners available, offering far more than sweetness alone.
At Northern Reach Maple, we believe nature already perfected sweetness. That's why every bottle of our pure maple syrup and every granule of pure maple sugar we produce comes from one ingredient: pure maple sap harvested from the forests of northern Maine.

A little operations update from the sugarwoods and the sugarhouse:
While all three of us were out pulling taps, our eldest officially closed out the season this evening by pulling the very last tap. It was wet, muddy, and rainy from start to finish, but we managed to wrap everything up before the thunderstorm rolled in overhead.
Now the focus shifts toward next season already. Inventories are complete for this year’s tubing expansion project, and it looks like we have most of what we need lined up and ready to go. Soon we’ll be back out in the woods clearing new routes, opening up lines, and preparing for another round of tubing installation deeper into the forest.
On the product side of things:

Our Creamy Maple Candies are now live on the website:
https://www.northernreachmaple.com/product/creamy-maple-candies/
We’re continuing to fine-tune our batches and processes to make these the best they can possibly be 😁 While they’re currently available for backorder, we’ll continue updating inventory as fresh batches are completed.

We’re also now offering 5 LB bags of Pure Maple Sugar at a more economical price point (for bulk users like bakeries) compared to the smaller 6 oz and 1 LB packages:
https://www.northernreachmaple.com/product/maple-sugar/

And finally… the next specialty syrup flavor is already on the horizon. No contest or guessing game this time — we have a pretty strong feeling this one is going to be an immediate fan favorite.
Beyond that, we also have a couple more products steadily making their way through the R&D pipeline.

As always, thank you all for following along and supporting what we do here in Northern Maine — there’s always something new brewing, boiling, infusing, or being built out in the woods.

Today we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. On this Memorial Day, we extend our deepest gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice so future generations could enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted.
As we gather with family and friends this holiday, may we also take a moment to reflect on the courage, dedication, and selflessness of our fallen heroes. From all of us at Northern Reach Maple, thank you to those who served — and those who never made it home. 🇺🇸

Sometimes the biggest upgrades on a maple farm aren’t shiny new evaporators or stacks of syrup bottles — sometimes it’s the equipment that helps make the woods ready for the next generation of maple production.
Before we can install new tubing lines, we spend countless hours clearing thick understory “puckah” brush by hand. The faster option is bringing in larger logging equipment for thinning and crop-tree release work, but heavy skidders and forwarders can compact soils and damage the root systems of growing maple trees if you’re not careful. That’s why we decided to try something in the middle: a compact track loader. The tracks spread out the machine’s weight, helping minimize ruts and soil compaction while still making understory clearing dramatically faster.
So…we took a gamble on a used track loader and paid probably about a quarter of what a new machine would cost. Honestly, I expected this thing to sit in front the shop for a month while we tore into an engine rebuild and sent the head out for machining. Instead, after an afternoon of tinkering, troubleshooting, and giving it some much-needed TLC…we brought it back to life!
There’s still more work to do before it’s fully field-ready, but this machine is already looking like a huge win for us. Faster tubing installs, less strain on the woods, and getting ahead of schedule before next season’s expansion work even begins. Sometimes the best farm days are the ones where an old machine decides it’s not done working yet 🚜🌲🍁
