Celebrated picking up this beauty with an absolutely perfect bottle of 2001 Château Angélus, which happens to be one of the best right bank wines of the vintage. I’ve been looking at a David Gilmour Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster Relic for awhile, so very excited to watch Echoes Live in Pompeii (highly recommended if you’re a Pink Floyd fan) and channel one of my all-time guitar heroes while sipping some good wine.

A pair of 1988 wines. It was interesting to try the 88 Lafleur, having recently tasted the 82/89/90 trio. This was a more muted style, with a hint of nuttiness and to***co. The 88 Haut-Brion was sadly corked, but the bottle appeared to be in good shape otherwise.

A pair of Château Trotanoy wines. I can’t recall having the 1979 before, but it was quite nice. While in the shadow of 1970/1971/1975/1978 Trotanoy, this vintage now shows off a lighter style and has obviously fully aged. This is more of a classic style. The 1982 is one of my favorites from the vintage, with a gamey profile and rich fruit. It took some time to come around. I liked this better than some at the dinner, but it’s more because of its sous bois style.

The rustic duo from the BWE night 1 dinner. The 1982 Château Magdelaine just offered very little pleasure, as the fruit had receded into the background. The Vieux Château Certan was slightly more approachable and interesting, but was still overall a very austere wine, certainly compared to the other wines on the table. As an aside, many of our friends in Bordeaux love the 82 Magdelaine, so maybe this was just not a good representation? 🤷🏻‍♂️.

The Bordeaux Wine Enthusiasts dinner continued with a pair of 1982 wines, Certan de May and Canon. At their best, these wines rock. I’ve always held a slight preference for the Certan de May, with bolder fruit and less austerity. On this night, both bottles weren’t at their best, though they were both still quite good. The balance of fruit and tertiary elements was off with both.

The first night with the Bordeaux Wine Enthusiasts continued with a pair of great Château l’Evangile wines. The 1982 was great as expected, showing off ripe red fruit, earth, to***co leaf, and mocha. A great example. Like the 90 Clinet, the 90 l’Evangile was the best bottle I’ve had of this vintage in quite awhile. Super elegant and with beautifully concentrated fruit. Three hours did nothing but make these wines better.

1990 Château Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarrosse and 1990 Château Clinet. The first red wine served that night (BDL) turned out to be the wine of the night. Firing on all cylinders, this has a fascinating nose and was a perfect example of this famed wine. I’ve always loved the mixture of warm spice and damp earth that I often find in this wine. The Clinet was the best bottle of 90 Clinet I’ve had for many years. It started out shy and reticent, but opened up beautifully over the course of the evening. Lots of plum, violets, and mocha. Lovely.

Enjoyed watching the Super Bowl with a mini-vertical of Château Lafleur. 1982 was excellent as usual, and was noticeably better than the last bottle. Still a brooding wine with dark fruit and incredible concentration. The 1989 was the best of the three on this evening, just perfectly in balance. Next to the 1989, the 1990 seemed a bit more restrained and with perhaps less fruit (splitting hairs). But let’s be honest; all three bottles were fantastic, and drinking any bottle of Lafleur is a special experience.
