Santarpio’s on Route 1 in Peabody keeps it wicked simple—and that’s the whole point. Short menu, no nonsense: pizza and barbecue steak, lamb, chicken, and sausage. That’s it. When you do a few things this well, you don’t need a novel.

Our go-to is always the steak tip skewer with hot cherry peppers—charred, juicy, and hitting every salty, smoky note like it’s supposed to. Pair that with a pizza and you’re all set. No frills, no trends, just straight-up Boston flavor.

It’s hands-down one of the most affordable spots on Route 1, welcoming to families, regulars, and anyone who appreciates food over fuss. And if you’re one of people whining about a bar being “too loud”? Congrats—you’ve found your place and Rick will take good care of you.

Small shop, tight menu, no nonsense — because when you make everything from scratch, you don’t need to show off. The star of the show is the pepperoni cup pizza, and yeah, it’s cooked well done on purpose. Crispy edges, char where it counts, and those pepperoni cups holding little pools of grease like they’re doing God’s work. Sauce has bite, dough’s got chew, and nothing feels rushed or frozen. EJ’s Pizza in Wilmington is the real deal—no games, no shortcuts. This joint serves specialty pies you’d whack a diet for. The GG go-to’s? Chicken Broccoli Alfredo that’s smooth as silk, and a Beef Brisket pizza that hits harder than a Southie right hook. Nick’s Place in Burlington is usually a go-to when you want a legit Super Beef — and we don’t hand that title out easy. This time though? Gotta keep it real. The sandwich looked perfect, 10/10 presentation… murder scene of James River and everything. But once we bit in… oof. The beef was over 50% grey, and that just ain’t it. Flavor didn’t match the hype. That said, we’re not quitting on Nick’s — everyone has an off day. We’ll be back. We just call it like we eat it. 🤌

Walked into Mad Matt’s in Woburn looking to find out what all the buzz was about. Ordered the super roast beef with sauce and cheese, and lemme tell ya—thing was unreal. Piled high, juicy, messy in all the right ways. Sauce hit hard, cheese melted like it knew its job. Easy top-three beef, no debate, I’d put money on it.

Only hiccup? The onion rings pulled a disappearing act. Nowhere to be found while I’m handling business with the beef. By the time I’m done, oh look, now they show up—boxed to go like they were in witness protection. Rings were solid later and they just opened up this week.

Beef like that buys a lot of forgiveness. Mad Matt’s is legit. Just don’t make me go looking for my sides again. We’ll be back!

The Gourmet Gangsters took a little trip to Windy City Pizza in Delray Beach, FL, where deep dish dreams, tavern pies, and Italian beefs meet Florida sunshine. From Chicago Dogs stacked like works of art to Beef Sangwiches soaked in jus like they just came outta witness protection — this joint’s servin’ the real deal Midwest mob meals, no impostahs allowed.
