One of the sights I grew up seeing all across Tamil Nadu was the sacred combination of a Neem tree (Azadirachta indica) and a Peepal tree (Ficus religiosa) growing side by side. Almost every village seemed to have one, often surrounded by a small platform where people would stop to pray, rest, or simply enjoy the shade. It always left an impression on me, so naturally I wanted to recreate that same combination here on the farm.

The historic freeze had other plans. Both trees were killed back to the ground. The Peepal bounced back with enthusiasm, but the Neem took its own sweet time waking up. My patience eventually ran out, so I planted a larger Neem tree in its place while carefully digging up the original survivors and moving them into containers at the nursery for some extra TLC.

Today, I finally got the Neem and Peepal reunited again, and it feels incredibly satisfying.

There is both science and spirituality behind this ancient pairing. The Peepal is known for supporting an astonishing diversity of birds, pollinators, and beneficial insects, while the Neem is famous for its medicinal properties and natural pest-repelling compounds. Together, they create a thriving micro-ecosystem that supports biodiversity and provides shade, shelter, and ecological benefits.

Spiritually, the combination is revered throughout India. The Peepal symbolizes life, wisdom, and divine presence, while Neem represents healing, protection, and well-being. Planting them together is believed to bring harmony between health, prosperity, and nature—a living reminder that humans and the natural world are deeply connected.

After all the challenges of the freeze, seeing these two old companions standing together again feels like bringing a little piece of home back to the farm. 😊

Friend or foe in the garden? 🤔

Meet the Saddleback Caterpillar (Acharia stimulea), one of the most beautiful little creatures you'll find crawling around the farm—and one of the few that strongly prefers a "look, don't touch" relationship! 😅

This colorful caterpillar is covered with hollow, venomous spines that act like tiny hypodermic needles. Brush against one, and you'll quickly understand why most predators leave it alone. The sting can cause intense pain, swelling, redness, and a rash that may last for days.

Ask me how I know. 😂

When I got stung, I did what Grandma always recommended for bites and stings—I applied a little சுண்ணாம்பு (chunna). Growing up, that was the go-to remedy for almost everything that bit, stung, or irritated the skin. Interestingly, slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) and similar compounds have traditionally been used because they are alkaline and were thought to help neutralize acidic venoms while also helping to dry out the affected area and reduce itching.

That said, raw slaked lime can be highly caustic and may cause chemical burns or further skin damage if applied directly. Modern first-aid recommendations generally favor safer products such as calamine lotion or other over-the-counter treatments specifically formulated for insect stings and skin irritation.

Despite its painful defense system, I still find these little creatures fascinating to watch as they wiggle their way through the garden. Before we label them as villains, it's worth remembering that they are part of a healthy ecosystem. They help support the food web, provide food for specialized predators, and eventually transform into moths, contributing to the incredible biodiversity around us.

So, friend or foe? I'd say neither. Just a tiny wild neighbor doing its job and asking for a little personal space. 😄🐛

Life is springing back up on the farm. Mother Nature has dusted off her paintbrush and started coloring the landscape once again.

After moving from Kodai to Florida, one of the things I missed most was visiting the beautiful Plumeria Eco Trails. My love for plumerias followed me here, and I slowly started building a collection of my own. Then the historic freeze arrived and wiped out much of what I had lovingly grown. It was a tough loss.

But every ending creates room for a new beginning. So I did what any plant addict would do—I started collecting again! 😄 This time I've added 20 different plumeria varieties, including some truly spectacular and rare colors. Every new plant feels like a small victory, and I can already imagine the farm bursting with blooms, fragrance, and color in the years ahead.

The rebuilding has begun, and I can't wait to watch this living masterpiece unfold. ❤️

🦋 Every Butterfly Tells a Story

Some of these butterflies were born right here at the farm. Others are travelers passing through, stopping by for a sip of nectar and a moment of rest. No matter where they come from, each one is a feast for the eyes and a reminder of the beauty that nature quietly creates every day.

Butterflies are much more than colorful wings floating through the garden. They are important pollinators, helping plants reproduce and supporting healthy ecosystems. Their presence is also a sign of a thriving environment, rich in biodiversity and free from excessive chemicals. When butterflies flourish, countless other forms of life benefit as well.

Watching them dance among the flowers, completely unaware of the joy they bring, fills me with gratitude. Moments like these remind me why we plant, nurture, and protect these spaces—not just for ourselves, but for all the creatures that call them home.

Feeling truly blessed to witness these tiny miracles every day at Ojhus. 💚

🐃 Domesticated & Untamed Pets at Ojhus 🦝

One minute the buffaloes are having their cinematic slow-motion water run like they own the farm… and the next minute, a raccoon casually shows up at the front door like he pays rent here. 😂

Not even scared. Just standing on the handrail, inspecting the property, probably judging our landscaping choices and checking if dinner was included with the stay.

At this point, Ojhus is less of a farm and more of a wildlife resort. 🤦🏽‍♂️🤦
