International Women’s Day
This photo was taken the night I received the Emerald Award from Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida, and the little girl beside me is watching everything.
As a Girl Scout growing up in Jupiter, I learned courage, curiosity, and how to try things that felt unfamiliar. Those lessons eventually took me across the world to Tasmania for my PhD, and later back home to start Live Advantage Bait—building one of the first commercial marine baitfish hatcheries in the United States.
Today, as a scientist, farmer, and mother of three, I’m reminded that the most important part of leadership is showing the next generation what’s possible.
Aquaculture, agriculture, science, and entrepreneurship need more women willing to step forward, take risks, and build things that didn’t exist before.
And if we do it right, our daughters will grow up thinking it was normal all along.
Happy International Women’s Day to the women raising families, building businesses, advancing science, and feeding our communities.
