Happy Mother’s Day to all the outdoor moms, business owner moms, science moms, and fishy moms out there.

May today bring you time to relax, connect with family, soak up some sunshine, and maybe even get a little salty.

This month we started our Aquaculture Resource Council at the Florida Department of Ag and Consumer Services Grant looking into biofloc production of marine baitfish
Biofloc, or the extremely way of converting fish waste into microbial protein flocs, is commonly used in shrimp and tilapia culture. And allows for zero water discharge and reduced feed costs. Will it work for marine fish. We will see.

Wonderful night at the annual dinner.
Two years off the board, but more committed than ever to building a profitable, sustainable future for Florida agriculture.
Grateful to be surrounded by such incredible farmers, leaders, and supporters.
And a big thank you to FFB President Jeb Smith for making the trip from Gainesville. Blessed to call you a friend —what a night.

International Women’s Day

This photo was taken the night I received the Emerald Award from Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida, and the little girl beside me is watching everything.

As a Girl Scout growing up in Jupiter, I learned courage, curiosity, and how to try things that felt unfamiliar. Those lessons eventually took me across the world to Tasmania for my PhD, and later back home to start Live Advantage Bait—building one of the first commercial marine baitfish hatcheries in the United States.

Today, as a scientist, farmer, and mother of three, I’m reminded that the most important part of leadership is showing the next generation what’s possible.

Aquaculture, agriculture, science, and entrepreneurship need more women willing to step forward, take risks, and build things that didn’t exist before.

And if we do it right, our daughters will grow up thinking it was normal all along.

Happy International Women’s Day to the women raising families, building businesses, advancing science, and feeding our communities.

Proud to sponsor this important session at .studentactivities World Aquaculture Society meeting this week in Las Vagas.
Introducing the next generation of aquaculture farmers, advocates and academics to join a professional conference is invaluable. And a wonderful tradition of this conference. This Wednesday high school students from Valley High School in Las Vegas Vagas will be attending. If you see them, please go out of your way to say hi, introduce yourself, and answer their questions.

Wish I was attending myself

This is what fishing done right looks like.

Snorkel down. Take only what you need. Handle it with care. Respect the place that gave it to you.

Watching William scallop in Crystal River is a reminder that fishing isn’t just about the catch — it’s about how you catch it. Being present in the water, learning what lives there, and understanding that these moments only exist if we protect the systems that make them possible.

Eco-mindful fishing isn’t complicated.
It’s slowing down.
It’s choosing respect over convenience.
It’s teaching kids that harvesting from the ocean comes with responsibility.

If we do it right, experiences like this don’t disappear — they get passed on.

Fish with intention.
Leave the water better than you found it.
