I guess cold weather is coming quicker than we’d like! If you’re like us, you spent the last week winterizing and getting those last minute projects done before the storm hit. I read that great falls has received 1.75” of moisture out of this and my guess is up here in Fairfield we have gotten more! Thankful for the moisture but we have cattle to breed this week and cattle to set up this week so I guess we will just keep on keeping on ❄️

As fall processing begins, this is a good read! One of my peeves is leaving vaccines in the sun and not just modified live, all injections can be less effective when handled improperly.

KANSAS STATE SAYS SUNLIGHT CAN KILL A MODIFIED-LIVE VACCINE IN THE SYRINGE WITHIN MINUTES.

Fall processing season is here, and the shot going in doesn't guarantee the calf is protected.

Modified-live vaccines carry a live, weakened virus. New Mexico State Extension explains it has to replicate inside the calf to build broad immunity. Heat, ultraviolet light and disinfectants kill it.

Kansas State Research and Extension puts it bluntly. All modified-live viral vaccines can be inactivated by sunlight, and sunlight will kill the vaccine in the syringe within minutes.

Where it goes wrong, per the extension guides: Syringes left on the tailgate, the dashboard or the working table between calves Mixing a whole bottle when the crew won't use it for hours Cleaning MLV syringes with disinfectant, which kills the next dose

How long a mixed bottle lasts: Kansas State and SDSU say to mix only what you'll use within an hour. University of Georgia Extension is tighter, at 30 minutes. If your chute is slow, go with the shorter number.

The fix is cheap. Keep bottles and loaded syringes in a cooler out of the sun. A foam cooler with holes cut in the lid for the syringes works, per K-State and NMSU. Buy vial sizes that match your pace, so the last doses aren't sitting mixed.

This isn't a claim that every vaccinated calf fails. Follow the label on the product you use. But a damaged dose looks exactly like a good one going in. You only find out when a break hits.

Where do your syringes sit between calves: cooler, box, or tailgate? 👇

The big groups are done but now is the time that we get going on our smaller herds! These ones in particular keep things interesting! Welcome girls 🐮

Our final big group is bred and out to grass! We had a wonderful time at the Borderview Bell Ranch this week! The weather was hot 🥵 but the cattle still cycled well and the crew was spot on 👌🏼 Brittany and Billy have worked hard to build the herd they have, tracking all the details and making sure to improve their genetics using artificial insemmination and retaining heifers through this program. Hard work pays off 🙌🏻 Thanks for trusting us with your herd and we are excited to see the calves you get next spring!

Summertime vibes 🐮 🌾

A quick glimpse of my steer calves sired by Ellingson Brickhouse and for April born calves, I’m really impressed with the growth on these calves. He threw some really nice heifers as well!

Fun fact- Rabbit was the first cow I bought when we first started our herd. She was a bum calf. Our herd has grown quite a bit since then and now Rhett has taken her over and she has a really nice heifer calf at her side this year. It’s ok to start small with 1 bum calf .. you never know what it might turn in to 🎉

Zane has been the topic of most of my conversations lately, but we can’t forget about this kid. Rhett has been my number 1 helper this spring/summer and has done a fantastic job! 🙌🏻 the confidence he’s gained this year is outstanding! He still won’t lope his horse but he’s there when I need him 💙

When it’s pouring rain at the end of June but you HAVE to pull CIDRs and give shots anyway … my crew was spot on 🙌🏻 we’ve received about 4” of rain since last Thursday here at the house! It’s an incredible blessing considering a month ago we were in a severe drought! So we will take it!
