Shannon Haven will have turmeric and ginger available at the YLNI winter market tomorrow (Saturday, 11/15) and next weekend (Saturday, 11/22) from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the new, easily accessible location near Jefferson Pointe: 3811 Illinois Road, Fort Wayne.

Culinary varieties available:
Peruvian yellow ginger (Zingiber officinale): yellow root
Red turmeric (Curcuma longa), deep orange root
Yellow turmeric (Curcuma longa), yellow/orange root

Specialty varieties traditionally used for health:
Green turmeric (Curcuma aeruginosa), green/aqua root
Black turmeric (Curcuma caesia), sky blue root
Black ginger (Kaempferia parviflora), purple root

We will have our crocheted items and baked goods available as well. Hope to see you there!

We are harvesting our yellow ginger, red turmeric, and yellow turmeric over this week and next. Rare black turmeric, green turmeric and black ginger are still growing so will follow later.

Please message or email soon to reserve some—quantities are limited since this year was dedicated to trialing new varieties that can stand the Indiana climate.

We will provide market dates for pickup shortly.

What’s growing at Shannon Haven? Well, the greenhouse and tropical herb beds are full of a variety of culinary and medicinal turmerics and gingers. These are long season plants and will be harvested at first frost.

What’s growing at Shannon Haven when all the turmeric and ginger are safely overwintering in cool sand? Well, Hawaiian Kava Rangi and Vietnamese black sugarcane are just starting to sprout from their cane starts. Thai ginger, or galangal, is staying warm in pots indoors. Japanese wasabi has doubled in size, and saffron crocus bulbs that didn’t want to stay dormant are up and looking for sun. These are the experimental crops that will grow along our regular tropical roots this year—a fun challenge to grow locally in nothern Indiana.

Ten-month tropical crops require early planning! Please send a private message if you might be interested in bulk amounts (5 pounds or more) of any of the following next season, so we can plan our seed stock and shade plots appropriately:

1. Peruvian baby ginger, our most popular tropical plant.
2. Red Hawaiian turmeric, a smaller, milder, yellow-orange root.
3. Yellow turmeric, a more pungent curry root.
4. Black turmeric, a vibrant blue root with a pungent, medicinal, camphor-type fragrance. (Limited quantities of this will be available as it is slow growing.)

Sunset over the gardens of Shannon Haven on that last gorgeous day of fall yesterday as we put the gardens to bed for the winter…

Three sunny plots brought in over 2000 pounds of potatoes and squash for our families, neighbors and community.

The sprawling new shade garden is almost finished being shaped into a peaceful retreat with trails and seating where we will grow hundreds of shade-loving turmeric and ginger plants next year.

And the remaining greenhouse turmeric is holding on just a bit longer to make it until Thanksgiving.
