Recalls Suck!

For everyone involved.

For the consumer who has to throw away brand-new produce because it's not worth the risk.

For the families who get sick from contaminated food.

For the local farmer who wakes up to demand suddenly quadrupling overnight, with no way to instantly meet it.

The COVID years taught small farmers a lot.

In 2020, we saw what demand could look like when people chose to support local. In 2021, we also learned how quickly that support faded once convenience returned.

Around that time, I kept hearing the Japanese word "muda," meaning waste—waste of time, energy, and resources. Farmers everywhere began trimming the excess, growing only what they knew would sell. Why? Because spending months and thousands of dollars growing another 1,000 feet of produce, only to watch it rot in the field, is the definition of waste.

Our food system in the United States has changed dramatically.

Eighty years ago, the milkman delivered fresh milk to your door. In-season produce came from a neighbor's farm. Today, most of us rely on grocery stores because they're convenient. The produce is polished, packaged, and designed to look perfect—but is it always the safest choice? Is it always the best choice?

To my fellow small farmers: thank you for everything you do, especially during moments like this. Your long days, hard work, and commitment to feeding your communities do not go unnoticed.

And to our customers—and hopefully anyone reading this—I have two challenges for you:

🌱 1. Keep shopping local, even after the recall headlines fade.
Don't let this be a temporary change. Local farms will increase production as demand grows, but it takes time to plan, plant, and harvest.

🥕 2. Be flexible and eat what's in season.
If your local farm stand, farmers market, or CSA is out of lettuce, don't give up—try something new.

Fresh basil makes an incredible Caprese salad. Zucchini is perfect for stuffing or grilling. Kohlrabi and cabbage make amazing homemade coleslaw. Shopping locally means eating with the seasons, and you might just discover a new favorite.

Every dollar you spend locally helps strengthen your community, supports farm families, and builds a food system that's more resilient, more transparent, and closer to home.

Thank you for supporting local agriculture—not just when there's a recall, but every chance you get.

So yummy!
