I recently made the choice to purchase all of my vegetables, fruit and meat from our local farmers now that farmer's markets have closed. These are the folks without big supermarket contracts. These are the guys that have struggled financially as they made the righteous yet costly choice to organic conversion and certification. They are the folks that always have a piece of fruit, a smile or a sticker for my wild and adorable four-year-old. So, I have pledged to do ALL my produce shopping through them from here on out. Some weeks, the farmer I buy from hands over a box of mixed produce for a flat rate. Last week, my box had a rutabaga, Brussels sprouts, green onions as well as some hobbit-sized carrots. The perplexing question of what I wanted to do with a Rutabaga led to this week's recipe...Carrot & Rutabaga slaw - and I honestly enjoyed it more than classic cabbage slaw. It was a revelation. So whether you dig the recipe or not, think about reaching out to your local farmers and ranchers. They need it more than your supermarket chain and we all gotta eat.
