Today, Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins joined Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association leadership and industry partners in South Texas to hear firsthand what worked, what we’ve learned and what comes next in the fight against New World screwworm.

The response to Texas’ first confirmed case showed why early detection and timely reporting matter. When producers stay vigilant and report suspicious wounds, state and federal animal health officials can respond quickly.

TSCRA has been proud to work alongside ranchers, landowners and agency partners throughout the response, helping share critical information, connect those on the ground with resources and advocate for the tools needed to stop New World screwworm.

Swipe through for highlights from the visit.

Cattle Raisers Convention & Expo is a place where business gets done, connections are strengthened and leadership takes shape through members being elected to help guide the association forward.

In the June issue of our flagship publication, we offer a first look at that leadership including an introduction to our new president, Stephen Diebel. You'll have the opportunity to get to know Stephen, his roots in the industry and the perspective he brings as he begins his two-year term. We also recap the 2026 convention from educational sessions to time spent on the expo floor.

Treated and inspected cattle can move. New World screwworm does not mean livestock movement stops. It means producers must follow established treatment, inspection and documentation requirements. Livestock that meet those requirements can move out of an infested zone and continue through normal channels of commerce. Here's what that process looks like: πŸ‘‡πŸΌ

β˜‘οΈ Consult your veterinarian about treatment protocols.
β˜‘οΈ Contact TAHC at 800-550-8242 to schedule an inspection.
β˜‘οΈ Following inspection, TAHC will issue an Animal Movement Certificate allowing livestock to return to commerce.
β˜‘οΈ Drivers transporting livestock through the infested zone must stop at TAHC checkpoints but will be allowed to continue travel.

Not reporting New World screwworm cases isn't just bad advice, it puts our livestock industry at risk.

Early detection, reporting and rapid response is how we beat screwworm.
