Spring in Humboldt has been great so far! Tree planting, seeing how well our orchard was pollinated and a couple of swarms captured is what’s happening. We replanted a lot of Honeycrisp that were diseased and planted a few more Granny Smith. Drip irrigation on the trellis is sure handy to have set up with how dry it is. We have a good crop of apples this season, we started hand thinning the third week of April this year!

Our CA native hedge along 101 is thriving! It keeps the wind down warming up our orchard and provides a home for native pollinators, birds and beneficial insects. See below for what shown in the reel.

Manzanita “Dr. Hurd”
Twinberry
Ceanothus with honeybee (and pollen)
Ceanothus
Wild currant
Pacific ninebark
Red twig dogwood
Elderberry

Thanks to nursery for supplying the 1 gal plants 8 years ago!

Mutsu! With over 30 varieties of apples growing in our orchard, some are I. Full bloom and others are just about to start blooming. These Mutsu bloom have been pollinated and set. You can see the fruitlets starting to develop! Thanks and .harvest.honey for the great pollination so far!

With the warm weather after this week’s rain, the pollinators are getting after it! Pollinators are a massive part in tree fruit production, and in addition to supporting our native pollinators we hire the pollination services of two local beekeepers. With all this nice weather and some happy bees we are hopeful for a good fruit set this spring!

That’s a wrap for the 116th apple harvest for Clendenen’s Cider Works!  The last Waltanas pictured here, with some fall leaves on the shortest day of the year. Many thanks to our orchard worker Lucy for her unflagging efforts! But that doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy cider, apples and local produce and grocery items. Our retail store is open 7 days per week until we run out of apples(looking like mid February 2026 this season). These late season Waltanas are some of the best apples of the year. While most varieties flavor and texture suffer from cold storage, these actually improve and will be excellent eaters and bakers through the end of our season.

The orchard colors are so epic right now! We’ve finally had a good stretch of colder nights and our trees are going dormant for the winter months. Not much wind either, and neat circles of fallen leaves are under each tree. We are still harvesting Waltana and Pink Lady’s, and prepping ground for next years tree planting projects. It won’t be long before we start pruning!

Hello local food lovers!

It’s been a wild couple months at the CW, getting through peak harvest and getting cider, apples, and local produce and goods into customers hands and bellies :)

Colors are changing in the orchard and we are picking Pink Lady and Waltana. We are continuing our weekly wholesale deliveries as well. You can find our apples at and + both use apples as baked good ingredients. If you are in NoHum these are some great options if you can’t make it down to our retail store in Fortuna.

We are so stoked to be working with many local schools and .harvesthub to make school lunches as tasty and healthy as possible. We were honored to be a part of a school apple delivery facilitated by the NCGA and harvest hub. It’s been a long time since we last sent apples out of the county(in the late 90’s we sent some Idareds to Lake county) and before that my great grandfather sent apples by steamship to The SF wholesale market when he first purchased our orchard.

We are feeling thankful for local ag, the support system farmers have in Humboldt county with organizations like the and .agriculturalprograms The last video clip is our 1959 for tractor/ forklift moving a pallet of school apples. We are also feeling thankful for all the local tractor mechanics, auto parts stores, S & H machine shop and ! We wouldn’t be able to operate our orchard and small business without them.
