When I was a kid an old horsewoman once told me you have to love the work as much as you love riding because there will be more work than there will be riding when you own your own horses. It's funny how life works I'm the old horsewoman and here we are

Why a good Horsemanship Foundation is important:
If your child aspires to ride horses then lessons in horse handling and ground work should be viewed as equally important to the riding, worthy of payment and here is why.

In school we tell kids "make good choices" generally this refers to their behavior, but around horses making good choices means being safe.
The simple fact is, a child can't make choices good or otherwise if they don't know what choices are better or worse. There needs to be a guiding force or individual that provides modeling , knowledge, and close supervision or they will be at risk around horses.

Riding may be the ultimate goal for all of us but to get there you must handle the horse, care for the horse, groom the horse, move it from point A to B. All of this takes time, exposure, skill, and knowledge . Those skills and knowledge are Foundational Horsemanship. Showing up for a forty five minute lesson on a horse that is tacked and waiting won't get you that.

In today's world there are amazing barns that can skillfully provide their riders with full service options. Barns where all care and tacking is done and Horsemanship falls to the side but those amenities come at a high cost,as they should. If you do not have the financial resources for such a barn than developing a comprehensive knowledge of Horsemanship is a necessity not an option -and it's the same for kids.

In a world where technology is stealing childhood and time in school means scripted content and more time on screens find things for your children to do outside with their hands and their bodies. Childhood for many is no longer a time of free play and exploration. We are in an era where standardized tests set the bar for success at the age of eight or nine and where anxiety among children of all ages is rampant. For those of us with land, animals, and space, where our children learn through chores and real life tasks we are blessed. We cannot deny who we are as humans. We all ultimately rely on this planet for our survival but we will not respect and care for what we do not know -get those kids outside! Let them run, dig in the dirt, experience animals, get cold , be sweaty, before it's too late for all of us -kids are the future.
