Nordland Heritage Farm

Nordland Heritage Farm Locally grown, lovingly raised old world meats and heirloom vegetables. All of our animals are pastured raised and we use no antibiotics or hormones.

We are a small family farm offering humanely raised heritage pork, goat, rabbit, chicken, and eggs. We have chosen to raise rare and uncommon heritage breeds because they taste uncommonly good. It may take a little longer for them to reach your plate, but after one taste you will agree, it is worth the wait! Nordland Heritage Farm is now selling heirloom vegetables and herbs in season. Just another reason to look forward to summer!

“Galanthus: Nature’s Winter Whisper”

Cradled gently on a fingertip is a snowdrop, or Galanthus, displaying a rare display of fasciation, where its petals and interior structures whimsically fuse into a ribbon-like form. Snowdrops are harbingers of spring, often linked to purity and hope, emerging even through snow to herald the coming warmth.

Ancient lore celebrates these delicate blooms as symbols of triumph over adversity. In nurturing these resilient blooms, plant them in dappled shade and well-drained soil, and allow them to naturalize, creating a carpet of hope beneath the winter-weary garden.

Did you know you can make homemade carbonated beverages with the natural yeasts that live on pine needles?!

You need sugar, filtered water and pine needles. We used red and white pine. Ideally, you want to pick the pine needles after a rain so they are as clean as nature intended; I do not recommend washing the pine because you want the yeast that naturally grows on them to carbonate your beverage. Add the needles to a clean jar with four tablespoons of sugar, fill the jar with filtered water and shake it so the sugar dissolves.

Place the jar in a warm place away from direct sunlight and leave it for three or four days, long enough for the little pine yeasts to carbonate your beverage!

Check out our blog post "DIY Pine Needle Soda" at the link below to read the full recipe.

As with any type of wild foraging, do not consume any wild products unless you have done appropriate background research to properly identify the plants you are foraging for. This post in no way replaces the need to properly inform yourself about what is native and edible in your area.

Stand still. The trees ahead and bushes beside you
Are not lost. Wherever you are is called Here,
And you must treat it as a powerful stranger,
Must ask permission to know it and be known.
The forest breathes. Listen. It answers,
I have made this place around you.
If you leave it, you may come back again, saying Here.
No two trees are the same to Raven.
No two branches are the same to Wren.
If what a tree or a bush does is lost on you,
You are surely lost. Stand still. The forest knows
Where you are. You must let it find you.

“It was as though the plants wanted me to write a different kind of book and sent gentle roots deep into my brain. They wanted me to fully acknowledge their importance in human history, their amazing powers of healing, the nourishment they provide, their ability to harm if we misused them, and, ultimately, our dependence on the plant kingdom. The plants seemed to want me to share with the world my own understanding of their beingness, so that people might better honor them as important partners in so many of our endeavors.”
