💜 Purple Basil Vinegar Update 💜

Our first batch of handcrafted Purple Basil Vinegar has been a hit!

We put a few jars out at the stand last week, and only 3 jars remain from this batch going out now.

Made with purple basil grown here at Fowler’s Family Roost and steeped for three weeks, this beautiful ruby-colored vinegar is perfect for fresh summer salads, marinades, cucumber salads, and garden vegetables.

Once these last 3 jars are gone, this batch is officially sold out. We will have a limited number of others available next month. Once those are gone we will be done for this season.

🌿💚 Morning harvest from the garden after the rain.

Purple basil, sweet basil, rosemary, thyme, dill, and cilantro all trimmed and brought inside. What started as a few little herb plants has turned into enough fresh herbs to season meals, make herb butter, infuse vinegar, and still have plenty left to share.

The garden is finally giving back everything that’s been poured into it these last few months. The zinnias are blooming, the strawberries are growing, and every morning seems to bring something new to harvest.

There is something incredibly rewarding about walking outside with empty hands and coming back in with dinner ingredients.

The herb garden is starting to pay me back. 🌿

This morning’s pasta salad got tossed with fresh purple basil, fresh green basil, and a homemade Dijon vinaigrette made with some of our just-dried oregano. There’s something so satisfying about opening a jar of herbs you grew yourself and using them in a meal a few days later.

Now to let it chill in the fridge long enough that nobody catches me sneaking bites straight from the bowl. 😂🍝💚

One of my favorite parts about growing my own herbs is being able to step outside, snip fresh cilantro, and turn it into homemade pico de gallo. 🌿🍅

Today’s batch is headed poolside alongside frozen margaritas and lemonade. There’s just something special about ingredients that go from garden to table in minutes.

This summer we’ll also be offering bundles of both fresh and dried herbs at our farm stand. Whether you’re making pico de gallo, seasoning dinner, or stocking your spice cabinet, there’s nothing quite like herbs grown right here at home.

Fresh-cut bouquets are out on the farm stand today and they’re some of my favorites yet. Filled with blooms harvested right here from the garden, each one is a little reminder of why I love growing flowers so much.

A little bit of garden joy. 🌸💜

This fresh-cut bouquet is waiting in the farm stand this morning, free to the first person who stops by.

Every stem was grown here at Fowlers Family Roost, and sharing the beauty of the garden is one of my favorite parts of growing flowers.

One of my absolute favorite plants in the garden is baptisia.

Every spring it puts on a show with tall spires of blooms in shades of purple and yellow, drawing in pollinators and adding so much beauty to the landscape. But what I love most is that it doesn’t stop there. The flowers make stunning cut arrangements, bringing a little piece of the garden indoors.

These blooms have been filling jars and vases all around the house lately, paired with peonies from the garden. There is something so special about walking outside with a pair of clippers and creating bouquets from plants you’ve nurtured year after year.

Baptisia asks for very little once established, comes back bigger and better each season, and never fails to put a smile on my face when it starts blooming.

If I could recommend one perennial for a cottage garden, baptisia would be near the top of the list. 💜💛🌿

At Fowlers Family Roost, we choose not to disbud or dehorn our goats, and it’s also why we refuse to participate in the practice when our babies leave for their new homes.

Our three original girls came to us already disbudded, so that decision was made before they ever joined our farm. As we’ve grown our herd over the years, every goat we’ve raised since has kept their horns, and that experience has only reinforced our decision.

One thing we’ve consistently observed is that our horned goats seem to handle the summer heat much better. Horns contain blood vessels that help regulate body temperature and can assist with cooling. While goats can live healthy lives without horns, we’ve personally noticed a difference in how our horned goats tolerate hot weather.

Horns are also a natural part of a goat’s anatomy and play a role in communication, social interactions, and herd dynamics.

We understand that not everyone will agree, and every farm must make decisions based on their own goals and management style. This is simply the choice we’ve made for our herd after years of observing and caring for these animals.

Because of that, we will never disbud a kid ourselves, nor will we arrange for one to be disbudded before leaving our farm. Families who choose a goat from us should understand that keeping their horns is something we strongly believe in and stand behind.
