Roßtal Hops Hops Yard. In the mid-1850s, three Hildner siblings-two brothers and one sister- immigrated to the United States from Germany.

They moved from Ann Arbor to Frankenmuth around 1854 when Johann Michael Hildner bought a tract of land. he sold half of that purchase to his brother, Johann Georg Hildner. The parcel contained 40 acres on the west side of State Road (M-83) and 20 acres on the east side. Georg married Margarethe Roth in 1855, and they had 13 children. Their youngest son, Leonard, took over the farm. He married Joh

anna Ranzenberger, and they had eight children. Their youngest son, Arthur was required to take over the farm even though he wanted to become a pastor. He also drove a milk truck for 35 years. Ronald, Arthur's only child, remembers being told by his father that he had to go to school because a 60-acre farm could no longer support a family. Ronald inherited the farm when his father died. A small portion of that farm was sold to his stepbrother, while one acre is still being used by Ronald's son to grow hops to make beer. The remaining 56.6 farmable acres are rented out. Currently, sugar beets, wheat, soybeans, corn, and dry edible beans are grown on a five-year, rotating cycle on the rented portions of the farm.
