Year end review—
2022 brought us many blessings and challenges. Here’s a look back.
Looks like we started and ended the year with a snowfall.
First group of goat kids bred on the farm were born in early February, in the midst of severely cold weather and snow. We had a couple of bottle babies, which made life in our little barndominium interesting! But Rudy and Lucy were so cute!
In March, we did some additional clearing in our small young orchard, which made for some large bonfires! We also transplanted 16 thornless blackberry bareroots and added a couple of apple trees.
April brought the completion of the second half of our pasture being fully fenced.
In May we brought in two groups of Cornish cross chickens and pasture raised, and later processed 56 birds. No store bought chicken for us!
May also began what is likely to be a several year process of logging cedars off the farm. It’s amazing to see the pockets that were so overgrown opening up.
More kids born in June when it was blistering hot, making for a total of 23 bucklings and doelings born on the farm this year! We sold off the last of them last month.
Add to that a litter of 9 puppies! (**We still have three needing forever farms!) They have been a blast, and are learning lots from their parents, Rosco and Daisy.
The garden was bountiful again this year, yielding plenty of tomatoes for sandwiches, salsa and pasta sauce, as well as some to sell. We had more okra and cucumbers than we could handle!
42 quart bags of purple hull peas, 20-25 bags each of butterbeans and green beans, and plenty of sweet potatoes this fall! I still haven’t mastered the cole crops.
In the fall, we had our pond dam repaired. It should hold for many years to come!
The end of the year is often about reflection. It’s amazing to see how much we’ve accomplished here in just three short years. From raw land to a real farm!
Now on to 2023! We look forward to continued growth and changes here on the farm!
Happy New Year!
