Shuck split has begun in our Schmidt & Gold sweet cherries. The beautiful stage when the tiny fruit pushes past the last of the blossom. This season is showing us a lighter sweet cherry crop than we’d hoped for, but the fruit we do have is strong and growing well. Farming is always a conversation with nature, and this year she’s keeping us on our toes.🍒⭐️

Blossom season at North Star Organics! Here, you can see a tart cherry tree with blossoms, specifically, an open blossom with a pistil in the center. The pistil is responsible for producing the cherry! A green pistil means a healthy blossom, a brown pistil means a bad blossom, but no pistil is really bad in the end.
So, how many cherries does that mean we’ll have? Truth is we don’t know yet! Nature will decide. For now, we wait and admire the orchards spring beauty🌸☀️🍒

Big things are happening at North Star Organics! 🚜 We just took delivery of 50,000 pounds of compost from the experts at DAIRY DOO and Morgan’s Composting. Every year, we send in our soil sample analysis, and the team at Morgan’s blends a custom windrow specifically to match what our soil needs. Healthy soil = healthy plants = a better harvests for you! 🌱✨

We’re busy installing irrigation in our 3rd-leaf tart cherry block. Eric Kobernik is handling the heavy lifting, filling in the trenches after laying down the new lines.
Up next: Emitters at every single tree for targeted, efficient watering. 🎯 It’s a lot of work, but seeing these trees reach their third year makes it all worth it. 🍒☀️

Clearing the Way for the Future at North Star Organics. As summer sun starts its slow descent into fall, we’ve been out in what will become a new cherry block, carefully picking out old roots and rocks from the soil and disc and disc and disc. It’s a labor-intensive process, but an essential one —It’s a reminder that good farming starts from the ground up — literally.
