Boyd Brook Farming Inc Raising 100% GrassFed Beef since 1990! Pastured pork available too! We raise about 100 head of Herefords. Which is great for what we do.

This year we are expecting about 25 calves using 2 bulls. We chose the Hereford breed because they are even temper and are easy to handle. Each animal has a name not just a number! Since our animals are all grass fed we do a lot of rotating from one pasture to another so they get the best grasses. You know the old saying..."you are what you eat". So we make sure they get the best grass and or ha

y! You can come to the farm to purchase meat by chance or by appointment. We can also be found at the Downtown Waterville Farmers Market on Thursday afternoon, the Belfast Farmers Market Friday mornings, the Hampden Farmers Market on Friday afternoon or the Blue Hill Farmers Market on Saturday mornings. Another product we are proud of is our pork. We raise grain fed pastured pork. We also feed lots of vegetables from our own garden and apples from our own trees! Looking forward to another busy year.

Calves are loving being on grass! Mothers too!!

I have decided I bring out the worst in the bulls, I swear!! Mike takes Max (the dog) in the buggy (side by) and goes around to all the pastures to check on cows every day. He says the boys are either eating or lying down. Never any fighting!
I go up to move them from one section of the power line to another that has lush grass. And what do they do?? Fight! Matrix and Marvin! Matrix is very friendly. Marvin is ok to work around, but he is not the touchy-feely type. And all they do is fight when I show up. I had to keep chasing them all the way to the gate, breaking up the fighting! They were the last two to go thru the gate. The rest already had their noses buried in new grass.
By the time I was done, I was covered in tics! I had wrapped my sweatshirt around my waste, and the tics had a field day! I had 5 on my stomach, two on the back of my neck and 3 on my back! Plus I took 3 out of the inside of my shirt. All week I have been scratching (or trying not to) tic bites! Gosh darn things!!

I am planning on being at the:
Belfast Farmers' Market Friday 9-1,
Hampden Farmers' Market Friday 2-5:30
And Blue Hill Farmer's Market Saturday 9-11:30 with 100% grassfed beef and pastured pork! As well as some 🍩 for two of the markets!
See you at the markets!

And then there was 1! We are down to one cow waiting to calve! Hopefully, she will have it today.
Genie calved Thursday, a boy. Jasmin calved Saturday, a boy. And Halo calved yesterday, a girl!
Right now, we have 10 girls and 11 boys! When Edith calves, it will either be a tie or the boys win this year!!

I've been working on w**d whacking more fence lines to get ready to move cows around. I've got 3 pastures I haven't checked and w**d whacked yet. I'm about 3/4 of the way done with the pasture by the road. We may end up taking hay from that one first. It's getting really tall! The cows don't like it when it's too tall!

My gardens are all in! All meaning 2! I put extra corn, potatoes and green beans in this year. And extra tomatoes. Why you ask? Well the frost got the tops of the first tomato plants and I couldn't throw them out so I planted them anyway! 😃 I will have a bumper crop of tomatoes, beans and corn if they all produce!

Gotta get going! Hope you all have a beautiful blessed day!!

Ps...I'll post the actual video of Halo calving in comments for people who would like to see it.

I had a very eventful day yesterday!
It started off with Mikey pulling out at 6am to meet a feller. And was going to be gone all day.

I get my coffee (gotta have coffee)! So as im getting dressed im putting my socks on and look out the windows and there are 4, yes 4 donkeys introducing themselves to Patches! Im like WHAT THE. ....
I thought I was dreaming! I've got half a sock on and get the binoculars and yup 4 donkeys!
I scramble to finish getting dressed and run out the door. Throw poor Max in the garage because I know nothing about these donkeys. By now, they are up at the barn. I close the gate on the bridge so they can't escape. They see me coming and come right over to me. They are the sweetest things! 💓
I immediately call Betty Hauger. Nope, she doesn't know who they belong to. I post a pic on our town community page inquiring if anyone is missing any donkeys. The only one I know of who has multiple donkeys is Emily and Stuart, but they are in Carmel. Can't be them!
So I feed the cows that are in the barn, and when I come out, the donkeys are heading around the equipment barn! Crap! The property is completely fenced in at this point, but I didn't want to have to chase them up back when I find who they belong to. So I sprint around and cut them off. Actually, they spooked when they saw me running! 😆 I grabbed some temp fencing to put across the road, but when I looked up, a vehicle was at the gate, and a woman was trying to open the gate. Must be the owner!! So I waived her in. Yup she had been driving up and down the roads looking for them! She was panicking because some person posted a pic of them running down the road with LOL like it was funny. And when the owner replied, "They are mine, where is this?" they never replied back! When farm animals are on a public road running, it is NEVER LOL!
The owner just happened to try driving down our driveway and saw them after I had spooked them running.
We managed to get lead ropes and halters on all four of them. I found a c**t halter which worked perfect the one of the minis but had to use the cow halter rope on the littlest mini. Then the fun began! We pulled and hugged and pulled and hugged them all the way home! Taylor, myself and her boyfriend. I have decided donkeys do not lead like horses! And of course it started to rain! Go figure! But we got them home safe and sound. Which was no feat because I guess people driving have forgotten that there is a law that livestock have the right of way and you need to slow down when approaching not fly by!!
I felt bad for Taylor because now she is 3 hours late for work!

After all that excitement, I head out to run my errands.
When i got back, Genie was calving! She had a BIG bull calf. Had just a little bit of trouble, but no problem. The calf was tight inside, so his front ankles were knuckles over, so he was having trouble getting up to nurse. I managed to help him up, and after a few falls, I got hum nursing! He was a hungry bu**er too! Drained all four quarters! Mom had him outside, and since it was raining on and off, I put him and mom inside on a bed of hay. Of which he was very happy to lay down and sleep! Happy baby boy!
Then I see Edith is close to calving, too. Probably she will have it today because I have two markets! I only have 3 more cows waiting to calve, and then we are done for this year! It's been 28 days since the last calf was born! We have been keeping the cows and babies in to wait for these last 4 but we ate almost out of hay. So this weekend, the girls will be put out, and we will have to send the last 4 out after they are all done. I have already put up temp fencing inside the coral to fence train the little ones before they go out. I did that last year and it worked pretty good.
Well I better get the donuts cooking.

Have a blessed day! And remember to always treat others the way you would want to be treated! (Even though, in some cases, it's a challenge!) 😊

If you like what you do, being in business for 36 years is a piece of cake!
Yes, Mike has been raising beef since 1990!
When I met him in 2007 he had 12 cows and 1 horse. Fast forward to today, and we now have 100 head of beef, pigs and still 1 horse!

Mike grew up with his family raising 200 sheep. Dairy cow for milk and of course meat. Chickens for eggs and meat. And of course, vegetables!

I grew up with my father being a herdsmen on a dairy farm in Gardner Me. And he also raised pulling ponies. So we grew up around cows and horses.

So what Mike and I do today has been instilled in us since we were kids. Work hard doing what you love and it's not work. It's a life! Thank you everyone for supporting us and what we love to do each and every day! Love you all!

See you at the Belfast Farmers' Market Friday 9-1 Waterfall Arts location!

And at the Hampden Farmers' Market 2-5:30 Friday at St Mathew's Church across from Hannaford!

Almost ready to move the mothers and calves out to pasture. Trying to let the grass get up at little taller. Plus, I haven't run my temp fence inside the coral to start fence training them yet.

Genie and Edith have finally started coming into milk! Yayyy. So they will be calving soon, week maybe? Now if Jazmin and Halo will catch up it would be nice!!

I was able to mow and w**d back up along the driveway and road along the fence line to the front pasture and hay field. Fact: did you know that cows WILL NOT EAT TRASH! A few weeks ago a woman parked her vehicle at the end of our driveway. I walked around it (I was headed up town) to make sure there was no one in it. (A couple of years ago, someone was doped up on drugs and passed out in our driveway. Called 911 and the ambulance showed up. Pulled out when ambulance operator opened his door)! Met the woman down the road, and she explained she was cleaning up the trash along the road! I expressed my gratitude because I hadn't gotten to it yet. She said there was so much trash it was unbelievable! Yesterday, I picked up even more trash discarded after her cleanup. Empty cigarette packs, soda cans, etc. Sorry, but our cows will not eat that stuff. I will tell you that calves will. And can get very sick from it! When you release a balloon, guess what.....what goes up must come down! I have picked up balloons in the field in the past too! The calves will nibble on the string, and then before you know it, the balloon is lodged in their throat and they die! So please do not throw litter ANYWHERE but in the trash where it belongs! Thank you. Have an awesome week! The weather is absolutely beautiful! FINALLY!!

We are still at 18 calves. The last four cows are still waiting to calve. None are showing they are close. I was hoping they would calve so we could put them all out to pasture together. Now, we will have to put the mothers out and add the other four afterward.
We've already moved the boys out and the heifers out on pasture. The grass is just slow in coming! Hopefully,
the warm temps this weekend will make the grass jump!!

We've had a pair of eagles hanging around this spring. Also an Osprey. The pic of the Osprey isn't very good, but that's what I got. Lol

We have had turkeys everywhere. Even people driving by are stopping to ask if they can hunt turkeys because they see them from the road. Unfortunately, as much as I want them gone, the answer is no. Max isn't fond of gunfire. And we have some cows out on pasture now.

Mother's Day was quiet, so I took Patches out for a ride. She is such a good girl! I grabbed her off her pasture, brushed her, threw a saddle on her, and off we went. Didn't lounge her or anything, and she was very well behaved!
This morning, I was cutting some brush in her pasture, and she decided to help by grabbing the branches and running off with them! She's quite playful! One day last week, I dropped her lead rope, and she ran off with that, too! Mike asked if I found the lead rope because he watched her take it. 😆

The pigs came last weekend! They are bigger than the ones we got last year. I get a kick out of watching them. Once they settled in, they got curious to check everything out. A couple of them are allowing me to scratch them. I miss the one I had last year, that was my buddy. He would roll over like a dog for belly scratches. He would start grunting when he heard me coming and would run right over to me. He was quite the ham!! 🤣

With the warm temps the weatherman is forecasting this weekend, I'm hoping to get the gardens rototilled! I'm itching to get the gardens planted. There is still the possibility of frost, so I will be patient! I forgot to move my tomato plants in, and the frost got those. So now I have to get some more! At least I am supporting the locals! 😆

I will be at the Belfast Farmers Market tomorrow, 9-1, then the Hampden Farmers Market 2-5:30 rain or shine! Hopefully it will be light scattered showers!
See you at the markets!!!
