Corn husks, Cherokee craft, and one decision we can't make.

Cherokee artist Laura Walkingstick returns to teach a workshop at Winding Stair Gardens on Saturday, September 26. Trouble is, we can't settle on what she should teach.

Option one: a traditional corn husk doll.
Option two: a corn husk tree topper for Christmas.

Take a look at the photos, then tell us which one you'd rather make. Laura's reading along with us, and we'll settle it Saturday.

One of Greg's favorite statement trees- and we've got five left. If you'd like a unique tree that draws interest for it's lovely sweetheart shaped pods, downward flowing leaves and bright red blooms that start in late summer, we have you covered.

That soggy corner of the yard has been waiting for this tree.

You know the spot. Stays wet three days after every rain, nearly impossible to mow? A weeping willow will drink it dry and ask for seconds.

Fall is the right time to plant here. The air cools, the rain comes back, and roots keep working underground long after the leaves let go. Put one in now and she spends the whole winter getting comfortable.

One rule: give her room. Willow roots go hunting for water, so keep her clear of septic lines, drain fields, and the foundation. Out near the pond or along the creek, nothing will look better than a weeping willow.

Every Franklin Tree alive today descends from seed the Bartrams carried home from Georgia. Not one has been found growing wild in over two hundred years. And here she is, blooming in downtown Franklin.
