The frost came and with it the end of the u-pick season. 🍂
Last night a hard frost hit the field at Misty Meadows. The dahlias that carried through September to October are blackened now, but a few stubborn blooms are still holding their color against that bright October sky. I took these photos in the field as a last look at them. They’re a little tattered, and I think they’re still beautiful.
This was my very first u-pick season here at North Star Farm in Franklin, NY. After moving the flowers here, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I planted, I hoped, and I opened the gates. You showed up, and I’m so grateful.
To everyone who came out this season, whether you wandered the rows with clippers and a bucket, brought your kids or your friends, picked a bouquet for yourself or for someone you love, or stopped by the farmstand to say hello: thank you. Every one of you helped make this season what it was, and I loved watching you find your favorite blooms.
The u-pick is now closed for the season. The field gets to rest. I’ll be tucking in the beds, digging tubers, planting tulips, and dreaming up next year’s flowers!
Until then, thank you for growing this with me. I can’t wait to see you in the field next year. 🌻

FROST NEXT WEEK? We continue to monitor the potential for early season frost across parts of WNY early next week (both Tuesday & Wednesday morning). This risk appears greatest south of Rochester & away from the lakes. Those with sensitive plants should continue to keep tabs on forecast trends as Frost Advisories might become necessary as we get beyond the weekend.

🍂 Fall foliage is really starting to ramp up across the Northeast! 🍁

The latest foliage map shows high color and pockets of peak foliage across northern New England and northern New York, while the change is continuing to spread south and into lower elevations.

Here in western Massachusetts, we’re still early in the foliage season, with more color expected to develop over the coming weeks. The latest reports also show peak color arriving in parts of Vermont and northern New York.

🍁 Northern NY/Vermont: Plenty of vibrant color
🌤️ Western MA: Color increasing, with more to come
🍂 Southern New England: Still largely ahead of peak

And this weekend’s cool, dry weather should provide some great opportunities to get outside and check out the changing leaves.

As the season turns, I trade my garden shears for a quieter kind of work. The fields are winding down, but my studio table is just getting started. I gather what I dried through the summer and set it out in a happy mess: ribbon, moss, grasses, seed heads, and whatever else caught my eye. A white heirloom pumpkin with Spanish moss for a nest and blooms tucked in one at a time until the arrangement feels just right.
Fresh flowers have a clock on them, and I work fast to keep up. And there is still a lot to do for fall cleanup. But in the meantime, dried flowers let me slow down. I can play, rearrange, step away and come back. The creativity doesn’t stop when the frost arrives, it just changes pace. These will be in the farm stand this week and I’ll be making more for Franklin Fall Day on Oct. 17th.
