Ever wonder how we keep our pigs out on open pasture without them running away? πŸ–βš‘

It all starts with how we train them. Before they ever move out to the wide-open spaces, we introduce them to a "hot wire" (electric fence) right inside the farrowing pen, backed by solid hog panels.

Why the solid panel? Because a pig's natural instinct when startled is to bolt forward. By putting the hot wire right in front of a physical barrier, we safely teach them to back away.

We put in this early training for one simple reason: animals that respect a hot wire get to spend their lives living naturally out in our fresh pastures and woodlots instead of being locked in cramped, concrete feedlots.

Looking at an overgrown, exhausted field, it’s hard to imagine it ever producing premium beef. 🌱

When we bought our 80 acres back in 2019, our pastures had been neglected for over a decade. The land had been repeatedly cut for hay without any nutrients ever being returned to the soil.

While some farmers use heavy tractors, tillage, and chemicals to fix exhausted soil, we took a different approach: we let our Dexter cattle do the heavy lifting.

Using rotational grazing, we move our herd to fresh grass every 24 hours. They act as natural land managers, grazing the forage right at the steep point of the growth curve, naturally fertilizing the ground, and moving on.
