Prices are going crazy on cattle. It is not unusual to see 800 lb steers selling for $3.50 lb live weight. A year ago they were $1.47 lb. If you have bought beef in the store lately you know. This is all due to only 4 major packers owning 95% of the market.
A $2800 steer would be fed by the packers for 6-8 months. That’s 4 lbs of feed to gain 1 pound. Total of 1600 lbs of feed. That is additional $800 plus processing and care and meds.
1200 lb steer results in 300 lbs of meat at minimum of $4200 or $14 lb. Wonder why prices at the store are higher that a cats back?
