Today’s Farmer Friday features Alex Mann of Seldom Rest Farms in Auburn, Kentucky.
For Alex, farming has never just been a career; it’s been a way of life. He started working alongside his father at a very young age and always knew he wanted to one day play a key role in the family farm, which his father founded in 2000. Those early years spent learning the ins and outs of farming helped shape the passion and work ethic Alex carries with him today.
Alex is a graduate of Western Kentucky University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Agriculture. While at WKU, he completed an internship with Hutson, gaining valuable experience that he was able to bring back home to the family operation.
Today, Alex serves in a management role at Seldom Rest Farms, helping guide employees, run equipment, and keep the farm moving from one season to the next. There’s never really an “off day” on the farm, and Alex takes pride in doing whatever it takes to keep things running smoothly and efficiently.
At Seldom Rest Farms, they grow double-crop soybeans, making the most of the growing season by planting soybeans following another crop. They also incorporate cover crops into their farming practices, helping protect and build their soil while keeping a focus on the long-term health and productivity of their farm.
Farming is truly a family affair for the Manns. Alex married his wife, Catherine, in December 2025, and she is also involved in the operation, working at the family grain elevator. Having family by your side makes the long days and challenges of farming a little more meaningful, and there’s no shortage of hard work to share.
When asked what advice he would give to other farmers and those looking to get involved in agriculture, Alex emphasizes the importance of persistence and perseverance. “Farming will always come with challenges.” He says, “Building strong relationships within your community and taking advantage of the many resources available to farmers is essential.”
