Story time. I call this one The Great Tomato Rapture of 2019. At least I think it was 2019. It could have been 2018. It was the first week of June. A clear cool day like today. I know now that frost can form at higher temperatures on a clear night with light to moderate wind. In this area June 1 is considered frost free. Frost free means actually 90% frost free. There’s that pesky 10% sitting out there quietly forming…like a frost. I woke the next morning to devastation. The difference of an inch or 3 in altitude determined the destiny of my tomatoes. One live plant, one, two, three plants gone. Another live plant. Another 2 gone. Some of you might think it silly that I’m having Tomato Rapture flashbacks today. The overnight forecast is 42°. Please note that the temperature is recorded at a height of 5’ (save the short jokes I know it’s colder where I am). ☮️ 💕 🍅 Once Bitten Twice Shy

Fresh off the sheep! Mulch wool for sale. Wool is a hygroscopic insulator and protects the roots from overnight cold and rising midday temperatures. It also holds water at the surface and slow releases it into the ground so your plants don’t get washed out. Lanolin, the natural oil in the wool repels pests such as snails, slugs, squash vine borers, and others. As it breaks down it fertilizes your plants and contributes to soil aeration. One of my customers has reported that this repels deer from the garden as well. Another uses it in her potted plants to keep them from drying out in full sun. 30 gallon bags containing approximately 5 lb of wool. Limited supply available. Your garden will love you for this. 🌼 🌱 $10 per bag.

So what are we looking at here? This is a blackberry cane. Blackberries have primocanes and floricanes. The primocanes are the first year canes and don’t bear fruit. The floricanes are the second year canes, reaching 4-5 feet tall, and are the ones that bear fruit. Having planted 40 blackberry bushes 2 years ago this year was slated to be our first big harvest and ability to offer blackberries at the farm stand. The devastating winter temperatures killed all the floricanes above 2’ which is where the snow line was. So basically we are looking at 2 years of planting, watering, weeding, pruning, and zero harvest.

Not Your Grandma’s Plant Sale! Saturday 5/9, 8 am - 4 pm

You won’t find one damn petunia here. You will also not find plant starts that have grown in a different climate that crash and burn when they hit your garden. Everything is grown beyond organic practice and has no chemicals, even those allowed by organic practice. What you will find is:

Heirloom Tomatoes chosen for taste alone. Don’t grow a beautiful tomato that tastes like water, or worse.

Heirloom Cherry tomatoes chosen for taste and beauty. There is no more to say.

Jalapeño TAM, a mild pepper developed by Texas A&M University, delivers a LOT of flavor with a just enough spice. Perfect for salsa, stuffing, poppers, and pickling.

Sugar Rush Peach peppers are a beautiful peach color bursting with sweet, tropical, and smokey heat. Great for sauces, jams, and salsas, particularly peach salsa.

Okra Alabama Red is sweeter and less slimy than green okra. Perfect for frying or stews and gumbos. If you don’t like snotty okra, give this one a try.

Cocozelle Zucchini will change your mind if you think you hate zucchini. If you are tired of the average watery zucchini with little flavor, give this one a chance. The firm flesh has a nutty undertone and holds up well to grilling or as zucchini noodles or zucchini boats.

Early Fortune Cucumber is a fortune indeed. These dark green spined cukes are sweet and never bitter. They can do all the cucumber things – salads, boats, pickling. They mature in 55 days and you can enjoy the taste of summer before your neighbors.

Genovese Basil is the gold standard of basils in Italian cooking, particularly pesto. Its fragrance is unmatched and intense.
Pineapple Mint is sweet and minty with undertones of pineapple it is a summer standard of cooling hydration in iced teas and cocktails.

Cleome Queen Mix is a combination of all your favorite princess colors – white, pink, rose and violet. These bloom each afternoon on sturdy and tall stalks with striking contrast to their dark foliage.

Benary Red Giant Zinnia is not your average zinnia, it is a bold and beautiful statement. The dark red 5-6” blooms grow on sturdy 3-4’ tall stems. You might want to plant them in the backyard so they don’t stop traffic.

Orange King Calendula is the Mustafa of Calendula. These 2-4” blooms on 18-24 inch stems roar with possibilities – cut flowers, saffron substitute, salves, teas, and salads – and they continue to bloom until frost.

Candy Pink Morning Glory puts its purple and blue counterparts to shame with its cheery pinks and happiness makes you wonder why you tolerated those moody blues in the first place.

Giant Moonflower is a must have for us garden folk who need to go extra. Evening visitors will be stunned by the 7-inch blooms reflecting the moonlight. Why enjoy your garden only during the day?

Prices start at $3
