It’s been a happy August ✨

The ground is hard and dry this time of year and it seems like any rain we might get gets soaked up before it reaches the plants. It’s also the last big push of summer before fall creeps in so there are a lot of long, hot days full of harvesting, seed starting, and bed prepping.

This year we grew heirloom corn and we know it will be a yearly staple on our farm. Saving native and traditional seeds has always been a passion of ours and now we are able to live it out.. This variety is our first to harvest and it’s called Bloody Butcher Corn, mainly used for meal. It’s an Appalachian variety developed in the mid 1800s. The stalks grow to 15 feet tall and their dry and rustling leaves are music on a hot August day.

At a time with looming collapse of the industrial food system as well as ecosystems across the world, one of the most important things we can do as farmers is to preserve seed, traditions, and techniques for the next generation. We work the land to we can learn to be human, and times like these has us thinking how important that really is.

We still have loads of flowers coming in and are using our spring water all across the farm to keeps the blooms rolling! We will be fully stocked with the colors of August tomorrow at Franklin Farmers Market. Come early! 💐

Inspecting the late succession of corn. We’re growing Oaxaca Green, Broom Corn, Bloody Butcher, and Indian Art Red Fire.

Bloody butcher is getting harvested this weekend! This is our first time harvesting and we are so excited to make home grown tortillas this winter.

‘Bright Lights’ cosmos are really showing off right now. 🤩

Pumping our spring water up to the top of the hill! The tractor is used to transport the tank close to the flowers to irrigate.

Our flowers are dropped off at grocery stores across Nashville and Franklin every Thursday! Turnip Truck locations and Green Hills/Franklin Whole Foods!

Late fall crops coming in nicely. We’ve been able to (mostly) keep weeds back and irrigate!!!

WILL’S FRIDAY FARM PHOTO DUMP

Late summer crops about to bloom! We have just about 4 acres cultivated. Might be time for a farm truck to transport the flowers back to the coolers.

SPRING WATER IS A FLOWIN’! It’s not a perfect system yet, but the water is flowing out of the spring through the dam into the tank up the hill (400’ of head pressure) (through two other tanks, we will explain later), then tractor over to the fields where the generator powers the pumps into our irrigation lines. WOO! And there, we have water. 💦

“hey lets run out to the garden real quick”

Even though it’s hot as hades in the middle of august, our days are spent tending crops for the fall and overwintering, reminding us that the lush gardens towering over our heads will have an end. We will try to soak up every bloom we can until winter sets in. 🧡

Happy Easter/ Passover week! 🌸🌷🐣

I’m not sure what I’m more proud of, the amount of flowers we have in the first week of April or the fact that most of what I planned actually came in on time!

In farming there’s a lot of variance between what’s on the spreadsheet and what comes to be. Luckily we’ve got a strong crew to help push the vision and make it happen!

Come on down to your local farmers market tomorrow morning to buy direct from your community for your weekend celebrations! ✨
